stable Henry Scales, of Prince Edward Island, reached Moncton yesterday afternoon with Dunbar McCabe, who is en his way to Borchester to secve two years and ore month for stabbing with intent to do serie‘s bodily harm. The prisoner is 17 years of age. It is said that since he was sentenced another party las been placed under arrest for the crime, and it is thought possible the sen tenced young man is irnocent.—Moncton Times.

Oxe of the best colleges in Canada, the McGill, of Montreal, is in financial difficul- ties, and its friends are asked to aidit. Its iavested capital is $400,000, from which it gets $25,009 a year interest, and it has a Gov arament grantof $5,500. But notwithstand ing this its deficit, last year, was $10,500, and this year it is $4,000. President Dawson has set a good example by giving up 4 year or two years salary. 1t costs a good deal of money, over and above the fees reecived from students, te run an edueational institution. The fees received ab McGill amount to $4,000, while the wheie expenditure is $45,000.

AN amusing case of violation of the Cennec- ticut Blue Laws has eccurred at Norwich, in that state, the culprits being ne less import- ant personages than ex-President Hayes, Con- gressman White, ard Dr. Bacon, and the offence consisting in the party taking a drive on Sunday in contravention of the old but still existing Puritan regulations for the order ef the commenwealth. The last-named gentleman is apparently a rigid Sabbatarian, and bas distinguished himself by his efforts in putting down a certain Sunday excursion, the organizer of whieh now threatens to retaliate by prosecuting the doctor. Each of the offenders in this instance is liable to a fine of twenty dollars.

The prisoners in Kilmainham Jail have been informed that they can only see phy- aicians, with the warden, at present.

The Press Association confirms the an- nouncement frem Dublin that the Land League has been proclaimed as an illegal and crimimal organization. The procia- mation was issued by by Earl Cowper, Lord Lieutenant of Lreland.

Dublin is quiet this evening. The Irish Parliamentary party held a moeting to-day to arrange the deteils of the Hyde Park meeting on Sunday. The party denounced the British Government, and pledged al! Irishmen in England to carry out the Land League principles with increased vigor.

The preelamation against the Land League warns all persons that the Irish | National Land League, or by whatey er | other name it may be salled, is an unlawful and criminal aasociation, and that a}! meet- ings to carry ont or premete its designs or purposes arco unlawful amd criminal, aad will be prevented and dispersed by force.

The proclamation warns the Queen’s sub- jects connected wich the League to discon- nect themeelves frem it and to abatain from giving further countenanes toit. All the powers and resources of at the Govern- ments command, the proslamation says, will be empleyed to protect the Queen's subjects in the free exercise of their law- ful obligation, aud to save the process of law on the execution of the Queen’s writs from hindrance or obstruction. It calis upon all Joyal subjects to uphold the authority of law and the supremacy of the Queen in Ireland.

A disastrous break occurred in Sny Levee, two miles above Scott’s landing, last nignt. The water is pouring throagh in torrents, and the land is being rapidly inundated. The disaster at this time will be much yreater than ever before, asa large arev of winter wheat is sown. Corn and other crops have wot been secured, and the bottoms are fuli of cattle.

JERSEYVILLE, Iil., Oct. 20.

Charles Cay and John Burnus went into Wesley Park & Sons’ Bank, at Feilden, yesterday, and at the muzzle of revolvers compeitled Park to give them $3,500. The robbers then mounted horses and rode away. Park followed to the street, fired and killed one horse. The dismounted robber got on the horse of hia pal, and they rode off to- cether. The sheriff raised a posse and is scouring the country. The robbers, it is said, cannot escape.

The military review to-day was success- fully carried out, and fully 45,000 men were in line from various Siates of the Union. They were reviewed by President Arthur, the Cabinet, Gen. Hanceck, and distinguished French and German visitois.

Advices frem Mazatlan give particulars of a terrible hurricane, Sept. 29th, causing great damage to shipping and other pro- perty. i wrecked. Most of the houses show signs ot falling in. It is stated 600 lives are lost in the neighboring towns from the recent freshets. @
