The Union [ron Works of San Francisco are going to open an iron shipbuilding yard at the Petroro, San Francisco. They have already expended $500,000 in getting a plant together, and expect to expend twice as much more. They hope when their works are completed to compete success- fully in the building of first-class iron and steel ships and steamers

His Lordship Bishop Binney has pub- lished a pamphlet entitled ‘‘Observations upon the mission held in the city of Halifax November llth to November 22nd, 1883.” It is an address to the ‘‘clergy and laity of his diocese,”’ and contains his loreship’s views on confession and absolution as given in 1874 in his ‘‘charge to the clery,” together with an account of the recent mission and the Bishop's opinions thereon, and an appendix containing citations from episcopal authorities.

The taking by the Prince of Wales of the degree of Grand Mark Master has resulted in giving an impetus to Mark Master Mason lodges throughout the country. Efforts will be’made,to reconcile differences between the Masonic Chapter of Quebec and the Grand Mark Lodge of England. English Freemasons consider that the recent excom- munication issued by the Quebec Chapter was ill advised; that the Quebec Chapter has nothing to do with the Mark degree, and that the system prevailing in Ireland, Scotland, the United States and Canada, in regard to Mark Masonry, is unsound.

Pitch, in China, is obtained from bore holes, which the Chinese put dewn for pro curing salt. These holes, which are gen- erally about three hundred fathoms deep

are bored with a wire rope, and salt water is raised by means of a bamboo rod with a valve at the bottom. When the bore-hole is put down to a still greater depth, con- siderable quantities of inflammable gas issue from it, as in Alsatia under similar circumstances. This gas has been utilized for lighting up the works and also for firing the steam boilers; sometimes, indeed, borings are undertaking in China for the purpose of obtaining gas for heating and lighting purposes.

Some remarks of Mr. Gladstone having been favorably received by the French press, as indicating his willingness for the resumption of the dual control in Egypt, the Standard raises a decided protest against such a policy, and urges that, even if Mr. Gladstone gave his sanction to it, the British people would not permit it to be earried out. The interests of England, the Standard insists, demand that the pre- sent situation which was brought about by British arms and statesmanship should be maintained in its integrity. A great deal of blood had been shed and much money spent in the acquisition of the influence which England now exerts at Cairo and to sacrifice it for the sake of conciliating neighbors who had refused to incur any risk or to give any support at the critical hour, would be a betrayal of trust and a failure of duty of which no premier could be guilty with impunity.

Time was, no doubt, when it might have been said:

“The House of Peers made no pretence

To intellectual eminence,

Or scholarship sublime.”

But the announcement that the aristo- cracy of England are about to publish a magazine, to be written by themselves, is a complete refutation of the libels com- mitted by Gilbert and other humorists of the day. The popular idea that brains and money are not often associated would pro- bably be shattered, if such men as Argyll, Lytton, Salisbury, and Lorne were among the constant contributors of a lordly period- ical. But these men belong to the greater aristocracy of talent, of which Carlyle was wont to speak so proudly, and their talents add lustre to their titles. They are known to the middle and lower classes as clever men, and they are probably the more popular on account of their paucity.

Messrs. Harper & Webster, of Shediac, shoe manufacturers, say as to trade during the year now about closing ‘‘We have had a good steady trade during the whole year, and our business has been larger than usual. Payments have been as prompt this season as last, and we do not think there is anything dangerous in the business out- look, our farmers have had good crops, the catch of fish has on the whole been good. Our lumbering interests are at present de- pressed, but with the short output, which there will be as a result of the low prices now ruling, this important industry will soon right itself. Our Moncton cotton mill is at present turning out goods that bid fair to be very popular, and we hope that the set-back which cotton manufac- turers have experienced lately will teach them a profitable lesson and that they will not again be caught making goods that are a drug whilst millions of dollars of other lines are being imported annually.”

“Qur Relations with Canada and tbe other great Colories’’ was the title of a paper read by the Marquis of Lorne, before the Royal Canadian Institute last week. Among those present at the session were the Duke of Albany and Sir A. T. Galt. In the course of his paper Lord Lorne said:— Information in regard to the prospects of life in the colonies should be given in our schools. If true information be readily obtained, it is difticult to believe that so many people will remain here who are without occupation. The areas of Canada and Australia are so vast, the fertility of the soil is so remarkable and the rapid increase of their population 18 80 certain that within the life of children of gentlemen now present their numbers will equal ours, and in another century they will be greatly superior to us in men and wealth. Our colonies give foreigners an ap- parent advantage over us. It is still our policy to remain their closest allies. The first step tu keep them firm in their alliance

is to work with them in pushing their com- merce.’
