Ceremony Honours UPEI Founders

The 2001 edition of UPEI’s ounders’ Day Ceremony, the second ear of the annual event, showed much mprovement over its year 2000 pred- cessor. Despite the cool weather and lhe occasional dust cloud blowing cross campus from the student centre onstruction site, the estimated two- undred first year students who attend- d as part of this year’s New Student )rientation provided much energy and thusiasm. Founders’ Day is held to hon- our those individuals who have been instrumental to the success of the University of Prince Edward Island. Receiving special recognition and Founders’ Day Medals were Father Murnaghan, J. Ivan Dowling, Earl Wonnacott and Joe Revell, who received his award in absentia.

Earl Wonnacott was a teacher and profes- sor of Sciences at Prince of Wales College and UPEI. Wonnacott founded the Charlottetown Astronomy Club and is responsible for the observatory that tops Memorial Hall. He continues to teach, giving seminars on Astronomy in the fall Senior’s College.

J. Ivan Dowling graduated from Saint Dunstan's in 1950, beginning his career in teaching the same year. Dowling was a professor of Mathematics, Chair of the Department of Mathematics at both Saint Dunstan's and UPEI, and Dean of Science at UPEI.

Father Vincent Murnaghan began teaching at Saint Dunstan’s in 1953 in the Commerce Programme, which would eventually become the School of Business Administration. At Saint Dunstan’s, Murnaghan was Director and Dean of many departments as well as a member of the Board of Governors and the Senate.

Joseph Revell served as a professor of Business and as the first Dean and Chair of the School of Business at UPEI. He was also a member of the University Senate and Chairman of the University. Athletic Board. Revell was not present at the cere- mony.
