Intramural hockey League Closes

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Pat Coyle, Jeff Trainor, and the rest of the Eradica- tors hockey team for capturing the 1991-92 Intramural Hockey Championship.

This year’s hockey season was blessed with many outstanding games. The fourteen team league dis- played signs of competitiveness, frustration, and enthusiasm throughout the entire season. There was no surprise that the teams continued their quest for excellence in the playoffs.

The final game saw the Eradicators oust S.D. & Macs by ascore of 6-3. It was only fitting to witness the two top ranked teams play in the final game. The match was exciting, and should bea great indicator of the calibre of hockey the league promised to showcase next year.

The league and teams are very grateful to the referees and score-keepers who made the games possible. Their attendance at each game made the league func- tion properly. The following referees and score- keepers appreciated: Jackie Caldwell, Steve Cooke, Pat Coyle, Paul Derby, Jeff Gallant, John Marc Laflamme, Rob MacKinnon, Jeff Trainor, Jeff Walker, and Kevin “‘K.J.’’ White.

Furthermore, we would like to thank Thane Hughes (Labatts Representative) for his contribution. A rumor has led me to believe that I must also thank the staff at the Barn as well.

The closing of the 1991-92 Intramural Sports Leagues will become official April 7 at the annual Intramural Sports Banquet. It will be held at 6:00 pm in the Barn. Tickets for the celebration will be issued to each team captain. Those athletes wishing to attend should contact their team representative.

The NHLPA has delayed voting for a strike until 4: PM (EST), Wednesday afternoon. I have not been thinking of the strike because the possibility ofno hockey until the fall chills me. I hope that Don Cherry is correct in predicting that the play-offs wi continue as normal. I will be crossing my fingers until I know for sure that the season will end witht Stanley Cup and not with a walkout or lockout. Wit the end of the season comes the award presentation:

Here are my expert opinions on where the trophies will go: NORRIS - Best Defenseman - Brian Leetcl of the New York Rangers has been having a wonder ful year. Other possibilities include Winnepeg’s Ph Housley or Detroit’s Niklas Lidstrom. HART - Mo: Valuable Player - The Rangers have improved great with the addition of Mark Messier; the players prai his leadership. I cannot think of another player who has contributed as much to his team as Messier has the Rangers. JACK ADAMS - Best Coach - What about Pat Quinn and those amazing Canucks?

MASTERTON - Dedication to Hockey and Persever ance - Either Boston’s Bobby Carpenter or the Islat ers’ Mark Fitzpatrick. Other nominees to date inclu Wendel Clark and Pat LaFontaine. VEZINA - Best Goaltender - Patrick Roy. No question, no alternate CALDER - Best Rookie - This one could go any- — where. I like Detroit’s Lidstrom, the Rangers’ Ton} Amonte, Buffalo’s Donald Audette, but Montreal’s Gilbert Dionne is in the back of my mind with almo any otherrookie, Any call? The President's Trophy, for the league’s best team goes to the Rangers. Wit if they get home ice advantage foras long as they la in the play-offs. I really like the Rangers this year. Okay. That is all I can think of today for the awards

The only thing I cant think of is the strike. If the

players strike and the teams continue with their mino league players, watch for Toronto/St. John’s to be on of the strongest. That is an awful scenario--the minol league players in the play-offs for the parent teams. : 3
