Of all the natural forces in the world & mother’s love is perhaps the strong- est ; hence the vast extent of a mother’s influence. The Church of Christ owes to the strength of sanctified maternal affection most of its noblest workers. The French Emperor, when asked what was the greatest need of France,replied “Mothers.” So to-day let the mothers of this country be traly and heartly on the Lord’s side, and their loving example, influence, and prayers, will do more to bring the rising generation to Christ than all besides.

There are times in one’s life when all the world seems to turn against us. Our motives are misunderstood, our words misconstrued,malicious smiles reveal to us the unfrieadly feelings of others. Oh! how hard it all seems and the more so that we cannot divine the cause. Especi- ally is this the case when the members of your church, or, perhaps, the loved ones of the family from whom yon might have expected love and sym- pathy, when these seem almost anxious to misunderstand you and do you harm.

Don’t live a single hour of your life without doing exactly what is to be done in it, and going straight in from _begin- ning toend. Work, play, study, what- ever it is, take hold at once and finish it up squarely and cleanly; then do the next thing, without letting any moments drop between. It is wonderful to see how many hours those prompt people contrive to make in a day; itis as if they picked up the moments that the dawdlers lost. And if you find your- self where so uiany things pressing you that you hardly know how to begin, let me tell you « secret; take hold of the first one that comes to hand, and you will find the rest all fall into file, od follow often, like a compaay of weil drilled soldiers. A man wasé@nce ask- ed how he “accomplished so much in his life.” “My father told me,” was the reply, “when I hadanything to do to go and doit.’”’ Thereyis the secret.

Household Hints.

Substute for Eggs,—Doughnuats made without eggs, and with a tablespoonful of cornu starch in place of each egg is a novelty, and is thought well of by some ceoks.

Buckwheat Cakes.—aA little cider if added to buckwheat batter will make the cakes brown nicely and help to form a sort of crust on the outside. If you haveno cider, pour a little hot. water over some apple pealings and let it stand for an hour.

Useful Pomade.“The Union Medicale gives the formula of Lasegue & Reg- nauio’s valuable pomade as follows: Chloroform twenty parts, and vaseline sixty parts. It has been used extern- ally with great success for rheumatic and peuralgie pains, andin the vague chest pains which accompany tuber- culosis.

Washing Blue Fabrics.—Articles of a delicate blue that must be washed are often ruined in the process ; this may be avoided by adding an ouace of sugar of lead to a pailfal of water,and letting the article lie in this for an hour and a half or even for two hours; let it dry them, after which it may be washed without injury. This issaid to be a perfect remedy for the trouble referred to.

Cure for Frost Bites.—Now that winter is here, deem it a duty to humanity to publish a cure for frost bites. Ihave used it many times with complete suevess. The remedy is to rub the afflicted parts with pure oil of pepperment. It will also prevent the after effect of chilblains. Care should be taken to use only the pure oil, and not the essence of peppermint, as the essence will not have the desire effect. — Peter Himrod,

‘To Make Celery Crisp.—Celery that is not so crisp as it should be, may be eaten prepared Jike this: After washing the celery and removing the green leaves, cut in pieces about as you do asparagus,then put it into boiling water that is salted; whea it is tender drain it, lay it on slices of buttered toast,

water in which you cooked the celery ; add butter, pepper, and salt to your taste ; serve hot.
