When the boat did not arrive until some hours had passed, and there were yet no tidings of their friends, then the fears were increased almost to a conviction that some dreadful accident had befallen the party. At a-later hour these fears were realized when the facts became known. As fast as the bodies were identified, by relatives and friends, they were taken to their respective homes. The unidentified bodies were carried to the eastern police station to re- main until recognized or otherwise disposed of. The parties resided in almost every section of the city being members of Catho- lic churches in different localities.

Capt. Matthew Webb, the noted English swimmer, perished in an attempt to swim Niagara river whirlpool rapids on the 24th. He was rowed out in a skiff to a point in the river opposite “Old Maid of the Mist” landing. by the ferryman at the Falls, and leaped from the boat at two minutes past four o'clock. The daring swimmer passed the big rapid all right keeping inthe middle of the stream. - When he reached the whirl- pook he was rushed to the American side where the waves, it is estimated, are from thirty to forty feet high, and the last seen of him he was throwing up one arm. His intention had been to pass the whirlpool on the Canadian side. His shoot of the rapids
