A BIT OF FAXPERIENCE. But yet I have ne'er found the creature So low, so depraved or so mean. —

But had some good impulse—some virtue That ‘mong his bad traits might be seea.

And, too, I have learned that most friendships We make are as brittle as glass. Just let a reverse overtake us— Our “friends” on the ‘‘other side” pass, tut, ah! I have found some few loyal— some hearts ever loving and true ! And the joy and the peace they have brought

me, Have cheered me my whole journey through.

The Secret of Contentment.

Nothing makes a man so contented as an experience gained froma well wateh- ed past. As the beauty of the finest landseape is sometimes married on actual inspection by a nauscous weed at your feet, or painful headache, or many little things, which detract from a love liness only fully felt in the recollection when those trifles are forgotten; 80 our chief happiness is too oft in recollections of the past, or anticipations of the future. Now, it is knowing what the past really was, which we now recall with so much pleasure, and over which there seems to be alight which never was on sea or land, that we are able to estymate the amount of happiness and value of the present. And I think he who does this will seldom do dicsontent ed ; for the miseries of life are few, and and its blessings are new to us every morning and evening.— Norman Mac leod. ;
