was to wait. for as surely as the twinkling stars looked down on the Green Forest each night. just so surely those Beavers could be obliged to go iarlher from the wa- ter.

So alter many nights of watch- ingnndwaiting the thing happen- ed that he had hoped would hap- pen. Paddy the Beaver went to a big aspen tree some distance from the water and began the work of cutting it down. It was much the biggest tree of its kind any- where near the pond. It would take I lot of work just. to cut. it down. to say nothing of the work and time it would take to cut off all the branches and then to cut the trun-it up into short pieces.

"I'll just keep away for a few nights and hunt somewhere else." thought Old Man Coyote. "Paddy will get. so used to not being frightened that he'll forget. that he is in any more danger there than he was closer to the water."

so Old Man Coyote kept away from the little pond deep in the Green Forest and for A couple of nights went hunting somewhere else. That tree was so big he was sure it. would take Paddy several nights just to cut it down. when he did return to his hiding place

To players who take A certain view of red-oubles. it will seem that this result wgs at. least as much South's fault as North's but unbiased analysis reveals that this was not so. The fact is that East's double or one club (which was I questionable. though lucky. act- ion) put South, with his freak holding. in it great dilemma. I! he bid two, three or four hearts dir- ectly over this double. he would virtually be abandoning his chance for a slam. since North certainly would not read the bid as indicating a hand as Biron-g as South held. Thus, while it is not ”comfort.able" to redouble with only a singleton of partner's suit, South's decision to make that call clnnot be censured. because it was the best way to ask North to step aside and let South take charge of the future bidding.

It was this message that North ignored. When South jumped over East's one-spade bid to four hearts. he was making the clearest sort of announcement that he did not require any heart support. and North should therefore have passed. despite the extreme length of his club suit. If South had had club support, he would have gone more slowly in the auction.
