The annual insult to the memory of Cob- den took place last Saturday. Some two hundred persons sat down to pariake of a sumptuous dinner, which probably cost at least £300. No one would have protested against this senseless waste more strongly than the great man in whose name the fsast was held. The general drift of the speeches was that of good w.il to all men who would un‘eignedly accept the Cobden creed as expounded by his followers, and uncomprising war against those who re- jected it. Looking at the tables, covered with costly fruitand flowers, obtained re- gardiess of expense avd of the season, the suggestion forces itself on the mind that in
future the motto of the club should be ltered to ‘‘ Peach at any price.
The Government is well aware of the generally pacific feelings of the mass of the people, and with this view keeps its military side 4s much out of sight as pos~ sible. But no sooner does the possibility of war draw nigh than the most peaceful mooks are forthwith occupied by stalwart guardsmon on ov off duty. Moreover, and this is of the most.serious import, with. in the past week all the most favorite walks of peaceable citizens have been invaded by batees of troops in full uniform, under- going their first lessons in the art of prac< tical warfare. Hyde Park swarms with in- fantey every morning, and a crack lancer regiment, just arrived from Brighton, lends its sid in keeping up the ground and ihe outward sembiance of militury duties. In front of the Royal palaces, wherever 4 vacant spot is to be found, recruits are to be seen drilling in the presence of a gaping crowd, which har no other subject of talk for the moment than the brightness of a regimental life.
The metropolitsin rates are not so light that rate-payers are’ especially desirous of seeing them burdened with unnecessary charges, vor are the benefits conferred up- on the metropolis by thefniue or ten large owners of property within its boundaries so great that rate-payers can care about adding to theit'incomes, The Marquis of Salisbury, haweyer, appears to think other~

His Lordship ‘was therefore to see his property quadrupled in value by the money of thé 'rate~payers, and they in return were; to obtain no benefit from their liberality. The result is that the bill is abandoned, and, thanks to Lord Salisbury’s obstinacy and greediness, one of the worst neighbor-~ hoods in Western London is to be left untouched.
On Thursday an action from the Ex- chequer, ‘“‘Robinson v. Bruin,” was tried before Under-Sheriff Br -cheli, to obtain compensation for injury inflicted by a dog, the claim being laid at £100. ‘The plain- tift, a waiter, had summoned some persons for an assault, and passiug the shop of the defendant, he saw one of the parties talk- ing. with him, The defendant set his large dog on a little dog the plaintiff had with him, and afterwards on himself, and the animal bit his leg, and caused h:m to be laid up for three months. A “very qu-et and orderly mob” took Marens Gonzales out of a Colorado jai the other night and hanged him to a telegraph pole, He had murdered an aged couple named Brown who had asked him to stay over night, actually killing Mr. Brown while ,he was taking care of his (Gonzals’) horse. lteturning to the house, the wretch k.lled Mrs, Brown, and left their daughter, Mr, Rice, for dead, obtaining four doliars for his butchery. He escaped to New Mexico, but was hunted down by detec- tives and brought back for trial, aad upon a preliminary examination was positively identified by Mrs. Rice, who, pointing to Gonziies, said, ‘*You are the man who murdered ioy father and mother and near- ly killed me.” He was also suspected of several other murders.
