Without the benefit of a cross- ruff, South would not have fared

chosen to draw trumps imme- diately, he would have made five

But this was obviously not a hand in which to draw trumps. Maximum mileage from the

slam despite the minimum bids ‘UP Suit could be obtained only

by using each trump separately and not together on any one trick. West could have defeated the contract had he opened a trump —not a farfetched lead on the bidding. Both North and South had indicated distributional val- ues, and a trump lead to cut down ruffing power was worthy of con- sideration.

Against this attack upon the imminent crossruff, no cure would have been possible. South would have made seven trump tricks instead of eight, and gdéne down one.
