CANDIDATES FoR DorcarsreR —Marshal Thibideau on Saturday evening took a male and female prisoner to Dorchester, where they will spend the next few months in the County jail. They were Joha McKinnon and Annie Gutro. McKirnon had been disorder- ly atthe railway station, and when remon- strated with by officer O’ Rourke assaulted him striking him with a box. Stipendiary Wort- man gave him three months. McKinnon who isashoemaker by trade and claims to belong to Prince Edward Island, has spent two years in the penitentiary for stealing freight from the Moacton station. ‘The Gutro girl was up some days ago on a charge of vagrancey, and given till the New Year to get out of town. THE Silver Keeord, of Gothie city, Col, Dec. 28th, says:—‘‘By a private lette: from Prince Edward Island, we learn that the great, low-priced contractor of the Rocky Moudtains, Maleolm McLeod, who skipped out last fall, between two days, leaving a host of sorrowing creditors, has returned to his home on Prince Edward Island, and is putting on a big splurge with his dishonestly obtained money. Besides this, we learn he is circulating false, lying reports about one of onr most honest and respected townsmen, Capt. Acchibald Mc- Leod. It is true that Capt. Archy was blamed by some of the people whom Mal- comb victimized, as the smooth scoundre] made them believe that he was a brother of the Captain, but luckily there was a num- ber of Prince Edward Islanders that gave

AN ORANGE FLAG BARS THE WAY—PBISHOP MACDONALD REFUSES TO PASS UNDER IT.
(Special despatch to the Halifac Herald.) St. Joun’s, Neip., Jan. 5.—An orange
flag was hoisted across a street in Bay {oberts yesterday. The Roman Catholic people passed under ii on their way to
chapel, but Bishop Macdonald of Harbor Grace, and his friends refused to do so, and claimed that the authorities should remove the flag, which he declared an ob struction. ‘The Government despatched a posse of police ao keep order, and, fearing trouble, the warship ‘T'enedos was also sent to Bay Roberts. There was no disturbance of any kind, nor will there be, unless an attempt is made to take down the flag, and whether that could legally be done or not is a difficult question to answer. The people of Bay Roberts, to the number of a thousand, held a meeting to-day and cor- demned the despatch of an armed force to a place they declared peaceable and law- abiding, and which to this moment has al- ways been so. Bay Roberts is inhabited by a stalwart, hard-working and peaceable people, largely protestant. The general feeling among moderate Protestants is that the flag flying is a childish thing of which its promoters would soon be sorry, and tha! Bishop Macdonald has been injudicious in taking offense atit. Any accounts mater- ially differing from this are contrary to fact. _— ———a > + i
