Status

Remember around 1968 when there was a hit sin- gle, "Pictures of Match-, stick Men"‘on the.charts? Well, it seemed that it was to be the first and last we ever heard of STATUS QUO. But six years later, this British gro- up is back with the re- lease of their new album, "HELLOI".

STATUS QUO has gone to the heavier sound over the last few years. Their music is gpod old rock and roll but it tends to get slightly repititiOus and is reminicent of J. Geils. One thing can be said for the group, their expertise on the instru- ments can't be denied; they are definately top rate musicans.

"Roll Over Lay Down" has a hard pounding beat. Variations in the melody add to its originality.

The lyrics seem played down and do not come ac— ross as clearly as they might.

"Claudia" eases the beat somewhat and the entire cut tends to sou- nd like an early Stones hit. The lyrics are cle- arer in this song; the English accent comes through loud and clear. If any cuts on the album were released as singles this would probably be choice #1.

"A reason For Living" turns to the rock and roll sound again. There's a great emphasis on the bass and it sounds like J. Geils plus BTO combi- ned. Lead takes over in "Blue - Eyed Lady" and takes the cut right into raunchy rock and roll. It's a super cut!

"Caroline" comes in strong and maintains it

with excellent rifts of drums, lead and bass. It's Stones music with Beatles' vocals. Quite a.combination!

"Softer Ride" is the best example of repetit- ion within a cut. It starts out quietly and suddenly breaks into rau— nchy rock and roll. In— strumentals are good but‘ the repetition kills the cut — half as long, and ~it would be the best tune on the disc.

‘"And It's Better Now" tames down a bit and res— ‘embles "Reason For Living' in styling. It would possibly make a 45 rele— ase.

We begin this series with a review of the "Canton Cafe", a popular Chinese-Canadian rest— aurant. This establish- ment situated on lower

Queen St. almost opposite

the downtown liquor store has a solid reputation for quality food and service.

We dined there on Wed- nesday night to check this out. The restaurant itself is reasonably plain; it cannot be cla; ssed as any specific type as the decor is neither

elaborate nor formal, but is suitable for al- most anybody; couples, larger groups, formal or informal dress. The at- mosphere is friendly and cheerful though a bit noisy at times.

On our visit we found the food tasty and the service excellent. We ordered the Dinner for two priced at $7.20 / which consisted of an egg roll, sweet and sour pineapple chicken, gar- lic spareribs, chicken ‘fried rice and diced a1— mond chicken. The food was served quickly in no more than ten minutes after we had ordered and it was delicious. Every- one else it appeared received similar service.

Hundred Time" is it. It's a long cut but its real rock and roll and makes an appropriate finale.

"HELLO!" is a good album but it all depends on your taste. J. Geils' fans will find the album similar to much of the stuff that group released but if you're not a dev- oted rock and roller, you could probably leave ' this album sitting in its jacket after 3 or 4 times on the turntable.

A good idea if you are

out with friends is to order different dishes and to try a little of

each with friends, making

The portions are big and filling so a half order in many cases is all you will need or Want.

To sum up we feel the Canton is well suited to your needs and as such we recommend it highly.
