Crvm Service Examinations. — The civil service ex«minations, which wil! be conducted by Mr. Ewen Stewart, Saper- visor of the City Schools, at the office of the City School Bosr’, will begin on Tves day, the 8th inst., at 9 o'clock. The pre- liminary examinations will occupy Tuesday, and the qualifying Wednesday and Thurs day. There sre four candidates for the former examinations and five for the latter.

Canadian Drink Bill.

McLeod's Hall preseuted quite an inter- caiing scene last evening on the occasion of anaddress delivered before Orient Div- ision by the Rey. J. A. Gordon, on the financial aspect of the liquor traffic in Can- ada. Mr Gordon wished to indict the liquor traffiz, and would do so on thres counts: First—That it destroys man as such; Second—That it destroys our homes; Third —That it destroys the nation. These | facta are conceded by all intelligent men, and it was hardly necessary for the Gov- ernment of Canada to appoint a royal com- mission and handsomely pay them, in orcer to find it out.
