Nicholson and bis assistant Miss (hristy Morrison. Too auch praise cannot be accorded Mr. Nichol- son for the progress made in the school during the short time it has been under

his charge; for, although young in years he appears to combine, in ® matked deyree, those natural

and acquired talents which eminently fit him to fill the position of principal in a schoul, which numbers among its graduates those who are fitted to adorn, and who do adorn the higher walks of life, men who have distinguished themselves in all parts of the civilized-word, both by.sea and land, shedding a lustre, not only on this, their native district,-but upon our Island home in general.

In connection with this, it would appear that thegrowingcustom of holding periodical examinations, aud awarding prizes accord- ing to merit, is productive of more good, acts as a better stimulus, and is more in keeping with this enlightened and pro- grestive age, than the eld time, but not honored, birch, or cat o’’nine tails. -The following is the
