As IL left the office Harry followed me looking fearfully downcast. I turned to bid him good-by.

I hesitated; the gig standing outside caught my eve.

‘That will do, but you won’t be able to shield anybody long, my good girl,

for 1 have a capital scent of the rogus.’’

CHAPTER XIV.

Il was so much shocked at the old law- yer's words, that when Harry returned to say he was ready I stammered ont an excuse as coldly as 1 could, and turning left him standing in the court. He did not follow me, as I had hoped he would do. I should have thought myself incapable of teeling any more shocks that day, but as I was entering Alice’s gates I started and almost fell. For there stood Egbert Lioyd. He too was implicated I felt sure, for he knew the woman.

‘‘T must speak to you, I must. I am almost mad.”’

Indeed he looked it. I turned back into the road with him to hear what he had to say for himself.

‘You must tell Alice that I insist on seeing her,’’ he said, with a savagery which almost frightened me.

“*She is bound by every tie of common honor to marry me. She does not under- stand that lam a desperate man. She has rulned me; she is bound to compen- sate me. She will listen to you, and you can tell her this, if she returns the letter I am going to write her to-night, I will not be put off again; I will see her, if I have to force my way into her house.”’

“She has ruined you! What do you mean?’ I exclaimed.

But Egbert did not arswer, soI turned and dashed through the gates, and went up to the house in a passion of distress.

Mr. Jones had said he would not arrive till late in the evening. It was half past nine when he drove up in a cab. He greeted both Alice and myself in his usual genial manner, but he had lost his accustomed brightness. “Dear, Mr. Jones.”’ I said, when I got him alone, “do you know, there is some one at least as much to blame as—as poor Harry.”’

Mr. Jones started.

**Well,’’ said he, who’s that?’

“Egbert Lloyd.”’

“*Egbert!’’ he echoed. to his interest to her wita.’’

‘*Well, Egbert knows something about that woman who seems to haunt the place.”’

**Nonsense,’’ said Mr. Jones, ‘‘Come, it is time to goin.”’ I saw that he was shivering, yet it was quite warm.

We had reached the lawn, when a fig- ure sprang out from among the trees and intercepted us. It was the woman who was haunting the piace. Mr. Jones was, if anything, even more alarmed than L He stood quite still. I tried to speak to her, to ask why she dared to come here. But she only tossed her head and laughed at my efforts, without even looking at ine.

“I shall have justice now,’’ she said.

CHAPTER XV.

As was to be expected, it was Mr. Jones who recovered first from the shock of the woman’s sudden appearance before us. I saw at once that he, a lawyer, jumped to the conclusion that the lady's errand was the levying of black-mail. He addressed her firmly, but with the utmost courtesy.

“Tf i¢ fs justice you are in search of, madam, you could not come to a better person than myself to get it for you. I am, as this lady will tell you, alawyea—”’ **f don’t want to know that,”’ said the woman, sullenly. The lawyer took this outburst quite qnietly.

“If,’’ said he, ‘‘you can make out a good case—without scandalizing this young lady, mind,’’ and he laid his ‘hand upon my shoulder—‘‘we will see if something cannot be done toward giving you justice, or meney, which you seem to consider the same thing, immediately.’’ She hesitated. The lawyer's unemo- tional yet courteous treatment evidently puzzled her. She seemed to doubt whether to trust these smooth

India has hundreds of dialects, which may all be classed under three great heads, the Sanscrit, Pracrit and Ma- gadhi, The Sanscritis the fundamentai language and that of the Vedas; the Pracrit, the vernacular language in many dialects, and the Magadhr of Misra is that of Ceylon and the Islands.
