The Rifle. Ottawa, Aug. 8.

At the meeting of the Rifle Association, held at Rideau Range, a match was fired with Snider rifles, any position, seven rounds at 500 yards. The first prize was won by Gray, with a score of 28 points, MeJarret won the second prize with the same score. Capt. Perley won third prize with a score of 27 points.

In the second match with Snider rifles, seven rounds at 600 yards, Private May won the first prize with a score of 26. Lieut, Chamberlain won second prize with the same score, and Staff Sergt. Armstrong with the same score won the third prize.

Tryixe to Brow ur A Magistrate.—A small building at the head of Hubbard's Vore, N. S., was partly destreyed about midnight, cn Wednesday, by an explosion. The building was the office of John Gib- bens, who is a magistrate, school teacher and custom house oflicer. A small box, containing gunpowder or some other explo- sive was put through a window to the floor and ignited. The window sashes were de- stroyed, the front of the building partly blown out, and the room set on fire. Mr. Gibbons, who lives in a house adjoining, was aroused by the explosion and extin- guished the flames.

Some time ago Missionary Brabant called the attention of the Department of Marin *, at Ottawa, to the humane of the Indians in Nesquiet, British Columbia, where the vessel was wrecked and all hands drowned. The Indians performed the last rites over t lead bodies that were wash- ed ashore, wray ping them in the best material that their dwellings afforded and burying them. For this kindly act the American gov- eroment sent the Indians $200 in recognition of their humanity. Asa further evidence of gratitude President Cleveland now sends the chief the gold medal,

The Oyster Season.

Orrawa, Aug. 8. By an order in council it is provided that oysters shall not be fished for, killed,caught, bought or had in possession between the lst of June and the 15th of September, both dates included. This date extends the time fifteen days longer than the order in council passed in May, 1868.

For some time past, an insect, which has been mistaken by many for the army worm, has been destroying the hackmatac trees of the Province, says the St. John Telegraph.
