Cuicaco, July 14.—The efficacy of pray- er is tote tried by the Women’s Coristian Temperance Union in the matter of rais— ing the $250,000 necessary to clear the Women’s temple from debt. The Union has set aside Monday next as the special day of prayer. Should the debt not be paid before January next the building at Monroe and La Salle streets will pass into the hands of Marshall Field. The amount owed is about $300,000. Marshall Field has promised to give $50,900 if payment is made before the first of the year.

Vaxcovver, July 15.—Word has’ been received that five big buyers of canned salmon bave combined to bear the market in England, which accounts for the Jow price of salmon at present. This action jeopardizes the big Washington State and British Columbia interests, aad the liveli- hood of thousands of fishermen. A num- ber of the big canners say the element of risk is so great this year that they will stop Canning or retire from the business, as five Englishmen have it in their hands to ruin @ great industry. These statements are on the authority of leading canners of the country. The industry, it is thought, may be saved by a counter scheme, namely ‘' « purchase cf al! the canneries obtain- ab! by one English syndicate. Negotia- tions in this direction are now pending.

The marriage caused quite a sensation in society circles here. The bride came to this country from Tipperary Ireland, and three years later entered the ‘octor’s emplove as lousemaid. The doctor took more than an employer’s in- terest in the fair Irish girl and finally pro- posed marriage. The young lady accept- ed, and after vainly endeavoring to have the Roman Catholic church, of which she was @ member, waive all restrictions,Miss Ryan gave up her religion and joined St. i Paul’s Episcopal church, of which Dr. Cadwalder is a member. Dr. Charles E. Calwalder is adescendent of the famous John Cadwalder, who arrived in America n 1687. Thebride comes of poor, but respectable IJrieh parents. She is 2] years of age, while her busband has paseed 50.

MEETING AT GRANDVIEW.

A large and intelligent meeting of the electors was held at Grandview on the 14th inst.

The meeting was addressed by the can- didat's 0. both sides, also by Alex. Mar- tin, E q., M. P.. and Mr. John F. McLeod, Messrs. McLean and Wood, the people’s cacdidates, were again and again cheered to the echo as they scored point after point against the One-Man Government and ex- posed its record of broken promises, reck- less expenditure of the public money, huge deficits, increased taxation and the numer- ous Other shameful acts of which it stands guilty.

The Peters candidates made feeble ef- forts to answer the charges made against their leader, but without effect, for the indignation of the people would not suffer them to practice their deceit here, and theyfreceived such a set-back as must have made them feel certain of an overw helm- ing dereat on the 2ist inst.
