CaTTLe AND Horses.—We learn from the Summersije Journal that Messrs. Avard & Drummond shipped tweaty-two head of cattle to Mr. John Macdonald, St. John, last Tues- day morning. This was one of the finest lots yet consigned to Mr, Macdonald. Among the nunber were two handsome bulls, weighing close upon a ton each. Five horses were sbip- ed by the same boat for different points on the Mainland.

More Horses.--The Summerside Journal says: Mr. W. S. McKie, of Charlottetown, shipped eleven horses to St. John last Monday morning by the Princess of Wales. They were an extr fine lot, being one of the best con- signments ever shipped by Mr. McKie, and were valued at $1,450. Mr. F. G. Bonneau, Digby, N. S., shipped three horses vatued at $459, by the same boat. Among them was the trotting mare Lady Dartmouth, purchased from Mr. Levi Silliphant. Mr. Bonneau, who is in the tailoring business, intends using this mare for driving and breeding purposes.

Ww.Robertson's Terrible Death

RESULTS OF A DRUNKEN BRAWL.

Hatirax, May 16. A special from Westville gives details of'a brutal murder there last night. Daniel Robertson, proprietor of a livery stable, was going home at midnight with three com pauions aiter a drunken debauch, and when opposite the residence of a respectable citizen named William Robertson, who had also been drinking, Daan. Robertson and his companions went to his namesake’s house, and a wordy war ensued. Dan then proceeded towards his livery stable, foliow- ed by William. When the stable was reached, the men clinched. Three spec- tators stood by in the midnight darkness, while Dan Robertson literally pounded his victim's face into jelly with an Iron bar. The gray streaks of morning revealed a _hor- ribie sight. Wm. Robertson lay in the gut- ter. His head was smashed in. His face aud jaws were battered ail out of shape. His brains were spattered on the sidewalk, aud he lay in a large pool of blood, which had oozed from his mouth, nose and ears The victim was about 37 years of age, aud leaves two children, of three years and one year respectively. The murderer was ar- rested. A cvroner’s jury returned a ver- dict in accordance with the facts. The people of the town are greatly excited, Removing the Bodies.

WILKESBARRE, Pa., May 16.

Fire boss Allen, rescued from the mine alive last night at 10 o’clock, died at 11 o’clock this morning. About eight a. m., an Opening was made into the chamber be- yond where the men were found last night and at various places 19 bodies were found, all more or less burned. At noon all but five of those in the mine when the cave-in occurred had been found.

Cabby on the Warpath.

Hatirax, N. S., May 16.

A man named Boutilier, porter at the (Queen Hotel, was nearly murdered this morning by a druaken hackman named Hannan, Boutillier expelled Hannan from the Hotel whereupon the cabby ob- taided « heavy piece of iron and smashed Boutillier’s face with it. The porter was unconscious for several hours.

A $35,000 BLAZE

Woolen Company's Factory Destroyed.

Many Persons Out of Employ- ment,

Tne alarm afew minutes after twelve to-day was fora fire in the Charlottetown Woolen Company’s factory at Spring Park, the main building of which was destroyed together with all its contents. The fire started in the room over the engi: e house, and may possibly have been caused by a spark from the boiler getting among some waste. But nothing definite is known as to its origin.

The engineer, Mr. Thomas Clarke, who was the only person present et the time the other employes having gene tu dinner, gave the alarm as quickly: 8 po: sible by blow- ing the whistle, but the flames spread s» rapidly that before the firemen arrived on the scene the blaze was coming ut through nearly every portion of the building. — In- deed, some assert that the blaze was com- ing out through the roof of the engine house, near the chimney, befure the whistle was sounded,

The firemen were promptly on the scene, and did all in their power to stay the pro- gress of the flames. Every inch of terri- tory was stubbornly contested, and the fire was confined to the building in which it Oliginated. The work which the fire- men had performed was made allthe more severe because of the fierceness with which the tire raged, caused, no doubt, by the in- flammable nature of the material it had to operate upon. In less than two hours after the fire started there was nothing left of the structure but a small portion of the front wall.

Every possible effort was made to save the machinery and other contents of the building, but without avail, The fire licked up everything in its way.

The building destroyed was of wood, three storys high, with basement. A por- tion of the engine house, which was at- tached to the south-western end of the building, was built of brick. The dye- room and picking room was also attached to the main building. In all, about forty- five persons were employed in the mills, most of whom will, in consequence of to- day’s disaster, be out of work for some time.

On the ground floor of the main building were a spinning mule, a spinning jack and two winders ; cn the second, carding ma- chines, and the third was used as a store- room. In the basement were fulling ma- chines, washer, shearing machines, gigging machines, breaking, winding and napping machines, etc., besides a large quantity of finished and untinished cloth, and other articles. The offices were on the ground floor.

The loss on buildiag and machinery is roughly estimated at $35,000. There is $5,000 insurance on the building in the Eastern, represented by F. W. Hyndman ; $5,000 on the machinery and $2,000 on the stock in the Guardian, represented by Car- vell Bros. ; $3,000 on the machinery in the Queen, represented by James DesBrisay ; $2,000 on stock in Western, represented by Horace Haszard ; $3,000 om machinery in Commercial Union, and $2,000 in Lanca- shire, represented by A. 8. Urquhart.

Sir,—At the request of a number of the clerks engaged in the city stores I, this morning, waited on some of those merchants who had signed the agreement which you published on the 14th inst., as to celebrating Queen’s Birthday on Mon- day instead of on Saturday. All of the dry goods merchants who signed tne firt agreement have, on reconsideration, re- solved to close their stores on Saturday, the 24th inst,, and the greater number of them have signed an agreement to that effect. It is but fair to many of those who signed the second agreement to say that they signed on the understanding that the Saturday closing resolution would be generally ob- served by those in their particular branch of business, Many who have not signed have agreed to do as the others do.
