He was twice elected as President, and was throughout bis career what the world calls ‘*a successiul man.”

The Proposed City Building.

A MEETING of citizens to decide as to the advisability of erecting a building for the amalgamation of the City Offices, the Police and Fire Departments, etc, will be held io Market Hall this evening. If the Council can show the meeting that | money can be saved, we assume that the} mecting will unanimously agree to their | proposal. If even they can show that! the cost of the building wil! not add to the burdens of the taxpayers, it may be takea for granted that the meeting will decide in its favor. For, in the first place, it is well to have building opera- tions proceeding in the city; in the second place, five thousand dollars have already been expended in the purchase of land, and if the building does not go on the interest will be lost; in the third place, the amalgamation of the Fire Department will not only reduce materi- ally the cost of that Department, but will greatly increase its affectiveness. aud tend to a lessening of the rates of insurance ; in the fourth place, the apart- ments in the Market House, now occu- pied by the City Council and the Stipen- diary Magistrate, can be either let as Mr. Blake’s meat market is, or ased by the city for market purposes, and thus add to the city’s revenue. These are, we thivk it will be admitted, four good reasons why the work should proceed ; provided always, that it can be shown that a sufficient amount can be saved from the rents now paid to meet the interest of the sum which the proposed building will cost: We hope that the

action in this matter will not be too hasty. It will be better to delay a little and get chesper plans than nip the

proposal in the bud, and so necessitate a continuance of the present very unsatis- factory state of the City Departments, particularly the Fire Department. Tax- payers, aud especially men of business, should be at the Market Hall iv force to-night.

— The Governor-General summarizes the Franchise Act very well when he says :

‘*The measure for the adjustment of the representation of the people in Parliament will extend the franchise to numbers who have not hitherto enjoyed the right of voting for the election of members of the House of Commons, and render such repre- sentation free from frequent changes by the wnconcerted action of the Provincial Legislatures.”

Gathering of the Clans.

This Scottish Gala Day, passed off on Thursaday,the 23rd inst.,with great success. The members of the Club and visiting’Clans- men, marched from their Club Room,Queen Street, to their grounds, headed by Galbraith’s Band and three Pipers. His Honor Governor Macdonald, as Chief of the Club, joined the procession, having with him in his carriage, Hector McMillan Esq.,

of Pictou, N. S., the Preaident of the Club, A. McNeill, Esq., and the Club Bagpiper. On their arrival at the

The field, enclosed by spruce trees, pre- sented a very beautiful appearance. During the afternoon the Grand Stand with seats for upwards of 1,000 people, was crowded. Kennedy’s Refreshment Saloon was deser- vedly well patronized. The light fantastic toe had full swing in the dancing booths The whole proceedings were very enjoyable and passed off very orderly.

Among the large number of leading citizens and others on the Grand Stand we observed, seated with His Honor the Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. Macdonald, His Worship Mayor Beer and Mrs. Beer, Rev. Mr. Macdonnell, Samuel Macdonnell, Esq., Q. C., and Daniel McNeill, Esq, Barrister, both of Port Hood, N. 8.; Chas. Palmer, Esq., Q. ©., Finlay McNeill, Esq., Summerside, Col. Duvar, and others.

The steamer M. A. Starr, Capt. Fergu- son, Commander, arrived on Wednesday evening, from Halifax and intermediate ports. She had on board some sixty excursionists to the Scottish gathering from Port Hood, C. B.; among them Samuel Macdonnell, Esq., Q. C., David MeNeiil, Esq., Attorney-at-Law, and others.

The party were well pleased with their trip, and delighted with the amusements of the day at the gathering.

The steamer Princess of Wales, under command of Capt. Cameron, also brought from Pictou landing 105 excursionists to the grand gathering of the Clans.

The railway cars, from all points East and West were densely packed. We learn the number all told, by rail, was upwards of one thousand,

Se Obsequies of the Late Rev. G. W. Hodgson.

Tue remains of the late Rav. George W. Hodgson were viewed by a large number of peopie during Tuesday and Wednesday,and were carried to St. Peter’s Church at an early hour yesterday, where they were laid on a bier in the Chancel. The Church was very appropriately draped in black in fitting expression of the people’s deep grief at their Pastor’s death, and in accord- ance with his expressed idea of what is be- coming in a funeral functicn, while a pro- fusion of flowers symbolized the gloriousness of his rest and suggested the sure and certain hope of his resurrection. Holy Communion was celebrated at 7.15 o'clock by the Venerable Archdeacon Gilpin ; at 8.15 by Rev. Mr. Kaulback, of Truro, and at 9 o'clock by Rev. V. E. Garris, of

Amherst, who was formerly Curate in S+. Peter's Church. During these services, members of the congregation

partook of Holy Communion for the last time in the bodily presence of him whom they loved so well in his office of their priest. At 10.30 0’clock the last celebra- tion,for the convenience of visiting church- meu was immediately proceeded by the office of the dead, the lesson being read by Rev. F. W, Marray, of St. Luke’s Cathe- dral, Halifax; Rev. Charles Darling, priest in charge, was the celebrant, the services being full choral celebration of Holy Com- munion. The pall-bearers, the Reverenda Messrs. Moore, Pictou; Murray, Kaulbach, Reagh (New London), Harris and Johnston, (Victoria), occupied seats in the chancel. Rev. Cecil Wiggins relieved Rev. Thomas Johnston when the body was carried from the church, which was crowded by. the large number of men attending the funeral. The order of procession was as follows :—

Medical Attendants. Cross Bearers and Acolytes. Priest in Charge (Vested), HEARSE. Mourners. Church Wardens and Trustees. Choir, Temperance Alliance, Public.

Crowds of people stood about the Church gate for over an hour, and numbers thronged the sidewalks along the route. The Hearse was almost filled with the floral offerings of the congregation and others. Among the mourners were the Reverend Dr. Fitzgerald, Archdeacon Reid, Arch- deacon Gilpin, and Rev. Charles O'Meara, while many of the clergy of other denomi- nations walked among the Temperance Alliance. It was a solemn procession—a grateful evidence of the love of his people, and the esteem and admiration of the general public for the devoted Priest, the good citizen, the talented scholar, and the eloquent reformer. His body was laid where he had wished it to be, among his people in the churchyard which he so ten- derly cared for, and about the adornment of which he gave instructions during the last hours of consciousness, there to rest until the hand of the coming Lord will raise it, a glorions body and incorruptible.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR,

An Explanation.

Sin,— Regarding editorial items and anonymous correspondence that has appear- ed in the city papers respecting the en- croachment of a certain church festival on the published date of one of Hon. Mr, Finch’s lectures, | may say that the date of the public announcements speak for them- selves. The Hon. Mr. Finch’s lectures were advertized on July 4th, whilst the church festival was not advertized till the 9th. Out of courtesy the church committee should have put off their festive! for a night or two later, when it was in their power to do 30. The committee in charge of arrange- ments for Mr. Finch’s lectures had very little choice in fixing dates of lectures, but did the best they could not to have them encreach on any other announcements, and they have aright to feel agerieved that another institution should encroach on them when it was in their power to have it other- wise.

With regard to the charge of selling some thing stronger than water, by the carter at the saloon, as it was closed on the 14th, | am glad to learn that 1 was misinformed. | only hope that I may have an opportunity to expose my informers, and therefore with- draw my statement. I am informed that the following includes all that is sold at the saloon: Ginger Beer, Ginger Ale, Soda Water, Lemonade, Lemon Syrup and Cider Beer.

I may say at closing that newspapers that refuse to publish Grand Lodge report should also have refused to publish ancnymous at- tacks thereon. I shall not notice similar attacks in future, whether they come from the pulpit or the pew,if the writer is asham- ed of his name.
