Artist: Underworld CD: A Hundred Days Off By: Jonathan DEAGLE

Although this CD doesn't innovate much from the typical Underworld sound, (epic- length songs, with nonsensical lyrics and constantly shifting beats) it doesn't come off as being a blatant exploitation of that formula. The first song, "MoMove" is for- gettable -- too slow to dance to, too fast to be "chill-out". It really doesn't work as an intro to the album. Luckily things improve quickly after that.

"Two Months Off", the first single, is not quite a masterpiece, but the combination of boisterous disco, mildy uplifting lyrics, and odd bits of humour, works. The next few songs are basically filler material(with the exception of "Trim").

Of course, most of this ambient noise serves as a lead-in to the main event of the album: ADinosaur Adventure 3d.@ The word event seems accurate in describing — this near-8 minute sonic journey, climax- ing with one of the most memorable moments in techno.

The CD loses pace after that, ending with the nearly-annoying, "Luetin". As a whole, this album probably won't appeal to non- Underworld fans, although "Dinosaur Adventure 3d" is certainly worth hearing.

Artist: AFI CD: The Art Of Drowning By Jonathan DEAGLE

Although this CD was released almost three years ago, it deserves a mention, due to the fact that AFI will be releasing their first major-label album in a few months. This CD represents the end of the "melod- ic hardcore" sound that they began devel- oping on Black Sails in the Sunset, and is coincidentally their most accessible album. The lyrics are a bit verbose, but don't detract from the quality of the songs. In fact, most of the elements of bad songs are contained on this album: a whiny lead singer who has a penchant for yelling rhythmlessly, songs the that shift pace without warning, bland guitar riffs, and so

on. In spite of this, the album triumphs, for the most part. The tracks seem to be arranged intuitively: they "flow" extreme- ly well, ending with the meek rock-ballad "Morningstar".

The single "Days of the Phoenix" sounds out of place, but is ironi- cally one the better tracks. This CD is worth buying, despite its current rarity -- . if only for a short introduction to a band that will soon gain mass popularity.

Book: The Crimson Petal and the White Author: Michel Faber

This is one big honking book. At 838 pages, The Crimson Petal and the White is so heavy, you arms will give out on you long before your interest does.

The novel is about a prostitute named Sugar, but she isn't the most beau- tiful woman in the world, but she has attracted a young perfume-heir away from his ill wife. She wears her one fancy dress, which doesn't make sense because she is not a prostitute of the lowest sort during her rein in the 1870s dirty streets of London.

ters in the first chapter and so on. Quite frankly, it takes forever to the story to start, but you do not notice, because Faber is taking you on a tour of London - a tour you will never forget. :

Written in the second person by times, along with in the present tense, i.e. ****You walk through the streets****, the novel reads like a lazy river winding through the gutters of a Victorian city.

If you hate reading about many characters and hate description, this is not the book for you. But if you're willing to give your arms a workout, this book will keep you up until all hours of the night.

This ain't no Dickens, but I'm sure that someday, this big novel will be on the reading list of anyone studying lit- erature. -
