Lower Great George Street.

THE special committee appointed by the Arbor Society to superintend the planting of Great George Street with ornamental trees, are to meet to-morrow forenoon. Great George is our widest

street, and the street by which the largest number of visitors enter and leave the town. Ii is, therefore, the street on which, of all others, the most care should be bestowed; and on it what is known as the Boule- vard plan—i. ¢., on each side between the sidewalks and the carriage way

spaces ov which grass and lines of orna- mental trees are permitted to grow— might with most propriety be adopted. But it cannot now be so laid out. The end next the wharf is, indeed, in a dis graceful state, requiring the immediate attention of the City Surveyor ; and the street must undergo considerable change before this plan can be adopted. To begin planting trees on it on the Queen's Birthday will, therefore be a mistake; and we hepe _ the Committee will, instead of proceed- ing to do so, recommended that the Arbor Society use its influence with the City Conneil to have the necessary changes made, and the trees planted and the sods laid down in autumn or next spring.

The second volume of the census is largely devoted to vital statistics. The table of births show that in the twelve months ending April Ist, 1881, the num- ber of births in the different Provinces was as follows :—

—The latest bank statement, that for April petened in the Canadian Gazette, shows that the circulation has fallen off nearly a million dollars; that the net amount of exchange due from the United States decreased in the month from $14,767,704 to $13,047,898; that the balance of exchange with Great Britain has been converted from a credit of $749,511 to a debt of $1,345,122; that the total amount of curren: discounts to commercial corporations were $145,220,- 761 at the end of April as compared with $144,957,709 at the end of March; that loaus on stocks are practically unchanged; and that cash reserves are reduced from $45,802,303 to $43,414,119.

To say what constitutes goed English would be too ~ y asubject to discuss he re; but it is ean fair to take the English of educated Englishmen as a standard. But of course there are other kinds, there is American English, Irish English, Scoteh English, the horrible Upper Canadian English, and, to mention no more varieties, there ie the fsland English. Of all these kinds unquestionably the queerest, with the exception of the Irish, is the Island dialect.

I am not now speaking of what is spoken by the poorer people, but by the more edu- cated class. In my sojourn in your colony, [have met aud heard speak, almost all your {principal people—judges, lawyers, doctors, clergymen, with their wives, sons, and daughters; and | think I may candidly say I have never before heen privileged to hear such a strange pronounciation of the King’s English from educated lips.

the Island is next to impossible. It is not quite Irish, and yet it strongly suggests it; it has no trace of English, Scotch or Ameri- can accent; it ia harsh, discordant,inelegant unmusical, and unrefined. It has a fiat, untrained, uncultured sound, as though no care had been taken with the voices and tones of children; and, indeed, the fault is mainly there. I do know a very few per- sons—moestly of English birth—who speak fairly well; but their children have the Island accent in its coarsest form, and the thing is disregarded. I also note, as a discouraging fact, that nearly all the public schoo! teachers (with a few exceptions, who are Nova Scotians, | believe,) speak most broadly and badly. Children generally are a little worse than their teachers, and the future of the English language in this colony, with parents and teachers speaking as they do, is quite saddening to contem- plate.

If the Island people could understand it, it is really a misfortune to a young man or woman to speak badly, and one notices it most in the young women. Taking them on the whole, the Island maidens are up to the average in prettiness, a little inclined to be over-blown and look frost-bitten, perhaps, but still ranging from fair to mid- dling. And it is, to say the least, dis- appointing to meet a finely-built, healthy young woman, looking quite like a lady, and to have ber spoil all one’s admiration by talking like a man-servant. In con- clusion I would suggest to the Island damsels to cultivate that quality of Cor- delia, whose voice “was ever soft, gentle and low, an excellent thing in wemen. Their voices are too high and harsh, too loud and stringent to be pleasant or well- bred. This accomplishment, combined with some refinement of accent, and a little more gentleness of manner would make them delightful to the ear as well as pleas- ant to the eyes.

Tree-Planting Notes.

HILLSBOROUGH PARK,

The special committee appointed by the Arbor Society to take charge of the tree- planting on this Park, on the 24:h, met this forenoon and made the required ar- rangements. Present—Neil McLeod, Wm. Murphy, Thomas Casley, Chas. Palmer, A ‘ A. McLean, Wm. Kennedy, Chas. Small- wood and the Secretary.

A plan of the Park, as prepared by R. T. Weeks, Esq., was submitted by the Secretary, showing the position in which the trees are to be placed. Chas. Palmer, N. McLeod and Wm. Kennedy, Esqs., were appuinted a committee to superintend. The Secretary was instructed to procure suitable stakes to be placed as directed by the committee. Mr. Palmer volunteered to have a horse and cart at the Park, to be employed in supplying soil where required.

After some discussion relating to the pro- tection and supervision of the Park it was resolved that the Secretary be authorized to apply to the Mayur and Stipendiary Magistrate, requesting that this special committee appointed by the Arbor Society be a supervision committee to take charge of the Park,

A meeting of the Special Committee for Queen Square was held this morning, when Mr. A. Newbery’s plan for laying off the Square was adopted. Stakes with numbers are to-day being placed where each tree is to be planted, and persons wishing to choose any particular spot on the square or outside can do so by applying to Mr, A. Newbery, who sill x ta the plan and supply tickets and regulations.

We learn that a large number of trees will be brought to market from the country to-morrow. A number are being to-day selected in the outskirts of the city. In Queen Square men will be employed to dig holes for the trees and to assist in planting them.

Commenting on the late fire at the Medel Livery Stables the Journal says:—We understand that Mr. Connolly has some trifling insurance of eight or ten thousand dollars, but this would scarcely cover one of his elegant barouches, to say nothing of the other handsome equipages and his mag- nificent stud of horses. We are glad to learn that although seriously inconven- ienced by the other morping’s occurrence, it will not interfere materially with the very extensive business which Mr. Connolly catries on at the capital.

A correspondent writes to the Journal and says that the lad Hickey, whose im- mense size we referred to in our last, !s ‘nothing more or less than an over-yrown youth, who is likely to become a burden to himself and friends by not being able to earn a living for himself.” We agree with our correspondent only partially. The youth is certainly overgrown, considerably more, but not less, but as to his inability te

A party of merchant travellers in a passen- ger coach were talking over their travelling experience and the danger of accidents, and tinally the question arose as to the safest part of the car.
