A youne Lap named Joseph Gillis, of Pisquid, was, on Wednesday, wounded—it is believed fatally—by the accidental dis- charge of arevolver in the hands of his uncle. The ball entered the abdomen and is supposed to be lodged in the spine. He is suffering very much, and the doctors can do nothing to relieve him.

Tuerz was a decline of attendance in the upper department of the Market to- day. Prices, however, remain unchanged. There was also a falling off in the sale of otatoes, prices being : Blues, 36 cents per bushel: Whites, 42 cents; and Roses very scarce at from 50 to 52 cents. Oats are selling at 30 cents for 34 lbs, and hay from

45 to 50 cts per 100 lbs.

‘HALLOWEEN’ was geuerally observed in this city by private parties. On the streets crowds of gamins marched to and fro seek- ing places to,¥ent their villiany. It is needless to say that the plucked kail stocks were by them misused. Beating doors, displacing doorsteps, removing gates were general—and every part of the city suffered more or less. Mr. J. G. Eckstadt, surgeon chiropodist, lost a valuable office sign, in- formation of which he would be glad to re- ceive.

Ir is nothing uncommon to hear of chil- dren being born on shipboard, and in- stances have been known of infants coming into the world within the walls of a theatre, in a church, in a railway car, a cab, or even an omnibus ; but a child was recently actu- ally and literally born ‘‘ up in a balloon.” A young married woman made an ascent in the captive balloon at the Paris Exhibition, and while in the air was taken ill. With the assistance of a doctor who happened to be a passenger in the balloon, the lady, whose husband is the son of a leading Man- chester manufacturer, was safely delivered of a fine boy before the air ship touched the ground. The happy father presented the doctor with 500 francs.

Ir is rumored that Miss Esther Cox, the

principal actor in the Amherst mystery, has}

removed from Amherst and is now in Sack- ville. It is also said that she is not now troubled in any way, and that the ‘‘spirit,” or whatever it is that has been kicking up all the rumpus, has informed her that as long as she remains away from Ambherst she will not be troubled further. The “Times” says whether the latter statement be true or not, we do not say, but is cer- tain that Miss Cox is now, or was lately in Sackville, as a Moncton gentleman has as- serted that he seen her there. The inter- est in this matter is quite general, and fur- ther developments will be awaited with some interest.

A diver was engaged on Tuesday last to search for the bodies of the women who were drowned by the sinking of the coal laden boat off Cape Bear on the Thursday previous. The King’s County Advertiser says :—‘‘He went under and searched the cabin, but neither of the bodies could be found. A few bundles of clothing were the only traces of them that remained. The exaggerated statements of the two men have elicited a good deal of adverse criticism, which is not lessened by the fact that they came ashore in a medium-sized dory that would conveniently carry six or eight per- sons. We learn that a number of men are at work to-day grappling for the bodies of the missing women.

A TELEGRAM to the morning papers an- nounces that ‘‘ a large quantity of Ameri- can obscene literature was confiscated on Saturday by the authorities in Ottawa.” Would it not be well if the authorities took equal pains to confiscate the home article, Says the Halifax Reporter: There’s the Mayflower, for instance, the organ of Free Love and Free Smut; which Messrs. Jones, Boak, Hill, and others, circulated so freely through this county and Province during the last election—an obscene production which has done more harm to the morals of this city than all the religious journals have done good during the last five years; fa- mailiarizing, as it has, the young with sub- jects, the study of which may very well be postpaaes till a more advanced period in ife; supplying brothel-house gossip and dirty innuendo for girls who cannot but be contaminated by the perusal; and shaking faith in good old institutions like marriage, advocating in its stead that miserable spawn of the devil called Free Love. Joseph McDonald appeared on a warrant. He was one of a gang of rough fellows who, violently assaulted Mr. A. Simm; on Prince Street, on Wednesday night. Mr. Simms states that a few nights ago he ejected a number of those fellows from the Reform Club Rooms for being intoxicated and creating a disturbance; leaving they threat- ened him with violence. On Wednesday he was attacked by five fellows at the door of Mr. R. Wright, on Prince Street. He fought desperately to get clear, but at length received a blow on the side of the head whith felled him to the ground. Mr, Simms then shouted lustily for help, and the rascals fled. The names of the others who were engaged in the attack were hand- ed in, and the case stands over till they be arrested. McDonald was admitted to bail.

The assault case of. Gillis vs. McMahon was brought to a close—the witness Me- Donald appearing. He stated that, at the corner of Queen and Richmond Streets, at 12 o’clock on Thursday night, he saw the plaintiff and defendant, each holdimg an arm of the young lady, and wrangling as to who should see her home. She, in his opinion, did not wish to go with either. He stepped up and said he would see her home, and she, arousing her previously trampled gracefulness, complied. He did not see any blows, but saw Gillis’ nose bleeding. Anctherunimportant witness was examined. The Magistrate said it was the most important assault case he had fora long time. Both appeared to be in fault ; however, he thought McMahon went too far, and he fined him fifty cents and costs.
