iii) The Vice President Operations: A prerequisite of this position is the ability to party non-stop for weeks on end. Meet Ms. Karen Bishop. The Barn is her basic responsibility. She and Holly (to be discussed later) coordinate all the pubs and the operations of the Panther Lounge. Overseeing CIMN is also part of Karen’s job. Basically, it is Karen’s fault that you can never make that early Friday morning class.

iv) The Treasurer: Tight-fisted, miserly swines, treasurers are lovable nonethe- less. Doug Clow is Mr. Financial of the Student Union. Doug’s responsibility is anything which involves money, which is everything. The job of treasurer is easily the worst on the face of the earth.

All four of the executive members are full-time students. We tend to be busy, irritable, and offensive. Please be patient with us. We are paid monthly by the Student Union, however, and you. have every right to expect a lot from us. We are human. Please feel free to let us know when we are screwing things up.

Council

Council is the ultimate boss of every aspect of the Student Union. You have as much authority: and responsibility on this body as every other councillor, including the executive. While Council will not be asked which channel should be played on the Big Screen TV in the Panther Lounge on a Saturday night (although it could dictate the channel selection if it so desired), it will be asked how our $160,000 should be spent, which campus police applicants should be hired, and whether or not an electronic security system should be installed in the Barn.

Council Meetings

These can be deadly. You must attend them all, though, or at least as many as is possible. Should you miss too many, you will be impeached and neutered. Traditionally, they are held on Sunday evenings. This year, on a trial basis at least, we’ll be meeting in the Panther Lounge (easy lushbags, no liquor will be served on the Lord’s Day).

These meetings are held basically for two reasons: i) so that everybody knows what everybody else is doing, and ii) to make decisions. In the early 1970’s the format of Council meetings was a simple steel-cage Battle-Royale wrestling match. The last survivor got to make all the decisions. Today, we take a different approach. We make decision as a group; that is, we vote on it (novel ideal, eh).

To make Council meetings as short and as efficient as possible, we have rules and we have someone to enforce them. The rules are called ‘“‘Robert’s Rules of Order’’, and our referee is the Speaker. Nils Connor has been hired as the Speaker for 1986-87 (yes, he gets paid to come to Council meetings). Nils brings small arms to every meeting, and he is not a patient man. Respect for his decisions (he really tries to be as fair as possible) will make for short, pleasant meetings. Nils is not God, though (sorry Nils, but you still haven’t mastered that walking on water feat yet), and we have ultimate authority over his procedural decisions. When and if he screws up, we are obligated to torture him mercilessly.

Robert’s Rules are very specific and very extensive. You could get a copy of them from the library, but you will be able to learn the basics by simply attending the meetings. It is very important to remember that if things are happening which you don’t understand (this happened to me about forty times a meeting for the first few months), ask Nils to stop the proceedings and explain what exactly is going on.
