Editorial 5: On council meetings and ambulance rides

This weekend a fellow employee and I had the chance to go to Antigonish for a regional confer- ence for student papers, and now we're back and trying pretty hard to get this issue out. The conference went well, but now on my return I'm left reading the SU's Student Benefit Plan. I'm try- ing to find out how much it will pay towards the cost of an ambulance. It covers up to $200, and I think the ambulance may have cost upwards of $350. Damn. ef

It was 3:30am and I rolled over in bed, and somehow my shoul- der came out of its socket. And it hurt. And I know that it can only be put back in if my shoulder is "reduced" through a lot of medication (it's a pos- terior subglenoid dislocation, which accounts for around 2% of disloca- tions). There I was; in my boxers and didn't want to take weight off my arm, so I dialled 9-1-1. An ambulance came to the residence. And every time 9-1-1 is dialled on campus the Campus Police are notified, so soon I was ina bedroom in just my boxers with two paramedics, campus police, and a RA.

And the reason I couldn't get dressed was that one arm was dan- gling at my side while my other one was pushing it back into the socket. Anyway, so for the first time in about 17 years someone else dressed me (a laughing paramedic). And I rode in an ambulance for the first time in my life. But now there is so much scare tissue in my shoulder that my shoulder does- n't actually fit, and I have to see an orthopaedic surgeon to clean out the socket and staple my rotator cuff back into place. And on top of that I'm

(that's very very expensive), we have a cool name, and have historically been very vocal at regional and national conferences. And we have a reputation for drinking which is only surpassed by Newfoundland and Cape Breton.

So I'll use our ability to drink as a tie-in for my first tangent, and make reference to my last editorial. Soon after the last paper was pub- lished, a person came up to me and said that they didn't like my editorial, saying it was very immature and writ- ten poorly. I didn't think it was, and it must be remembered that I write these early on a Monday morning. However, as I delivered papers I came across a Dean, who said that it was my best . editorial yet, and was very well bal- anced. And after that I only got posi- tive comments on our last issue.

Our last issue was full of let- ters to the editor, and it's great to see students wanting to have their voice heard. And I invite anyone who has an opinion on anything they read in The Cadre to write one, I know having your name put to something can be intimidating, but it is exciting and chances are there's a hundred other people who feel the same way you do. Just sit down and type it out, and email it to tlloyd@upei.ca. And it doesn't have to be in response to any- thing you've read in The Cadre, it can be on anything that you've seen on campus. And holy crap is there ever a lot which could be written on.

Senate Representative, and there were a few things that were said and that I noted. At UPEI there are 3,323 full

time students, and 550 part time. Two Sundays ago the number of full time was 3,266. The Student Union employs 95 people. Over the next year and a half AVC will see $30,000,000 spent on renovations and new con- struction (for comparison the SUB cost $5,500,000). Over the next five years UPEI will likely be infused with upwards of $100,000,000 in capital and research spending if all goes well. There is a new residence being built. UPEI will cover some of the cost over-runs of the CARI project under the threat that if they choose not to, the project would not be able to be

_ finished. The pools won't open on

time. Students have a right to know

about these things. That's why I ran

for Senate, and why you'll see more Council and Senate updates.

Anyone is open to attend the meetings too, but I know that for the past four years I've only been to three Council meetings, and found them — very mundane. Yet exciting stuff is said; you just have to listen for it. And with my position as Senator, Councilor and Editor-in-Chief I intend to bring the readers of The Cadre the juicy stuff talked about, and try to save you from sitting at the fringes of Council. So stayed tuned, and I'll give you a distiled and accessible version of what's said at Council and Senate.

I think that makes a few peo- ple nervous.

And I'm not going to say that it shouldn't.

So that was one event of my weekend. We got a lot of work done, as is always done at these conferences, and I learned quite a bit about running a student paper,. And I'm always so god-damned proud to be a part of The Cadre. Other student papers just love us; we are what they all can only dream to be like.
