And another despatch from Hong Kong states that 1,700 troops from Shanghai on their way to Canton passed through Hong Kong on the 4th. More troops are arriving from Shanghai.

The London Standard’s correspondent at the Hague telegraphs that only two perscns were saved of the entire population of Merak. Excitemeut at Lamfon is probably owing to the native priests working upon the fanaticism of the people.

The Swiss government has refused to ex- tradite Lening, the American student who killed a fellow student in a duel in Ger- many, as duelling is not named in the ex- tradition treaty. In accordance with this decision the court ordered the release of Lening from custody, and he was thereupon liberated.

The State department has been advised by the United States Minister at Bangkog of the contemplated departure for the United States and England of au embassy from the United Kingdom of Siam, com- posed of His Royal Highness Prince Krom Mun Haresrharrehd, the secretary of the legatiou and two military and one naval attache.

The French ambassador to the Vatican has had several interviews with Cardinal Jacobini, the Papal Secretary of State, for the purpose of arriving a: a definite agree- ment concerning the interpretation of the Concordat in relation to the salaries of the clergy in France. The decision of the Vatican, it is expected, will be anneunced on the 5th.

A bloody encounter occurred on Sunday, at Manchester, Ky., in the mountainous part of the State. Marshal Marcum, assist- ed by ex-Marshal A. J. Hacker, attempted to arrest Jud Links, when A. Stevens inter- fered and mortally wounded Hacker. Links fatally stabbed Marcum. As soon as Hack- er's brothers heard of his death they armed themselves and shot and killed Stevens. Links was also shot and slightly wounded. He has since been arrested.

Another despatch to the Standard from Hong Kong, dated 4th, stated that 15,000 troops that crossed the line at Mongkai on the 3rd, have entered Tonquin territory and are stated to be marching in the direc- tion of Haidnong, where two French com- panies are stationed. The missionaries have fled from the stations on the route taken by the Chinese troops. Two Annam- ite converts have been killed. Mongkai, where the Chinese troops crossed, is a sea- port on the frontier line.

The London Standard’s despatch from Hong Kong states that 4.000 Chinese troops, which were stationed at Pakoi, have been ordered to the frontier. The Annam- ites still threaten Namdinh. There is much excitement in Hong Kong consequent upon the receipt of news there that Chinese troops are crossing in Mongkai, This news if confirmed, means that China has accept- ed the gauge that France has thrown down and that war is inevitable.

Vessels arriving at New York continue to bring tidings of fearful weather and dis- aster. The British steamer ‘‘Macedonian,” from Marseilles, which arrived here to-day, ug. 3ist, at 4.80 p. m., in , sighted a bargue with

The harvest returns of France are un- satisfactory. It is stated to be certain that large imports of cereals will be required this year.

Fighting is reported to have occurred at Coomassie between the king of Abyssinia and another potentate, sixty of the latter's men being killed.

More than £43,000 books and pamphlets have already been published on the subject of electricity. No wonder we know next to nothing about it.

The rumored death of the Queen of Madagascar is confirmed, and she is suc- ceeded by her niece, who is represented as being strenuously opposed to the French.

The daily expenditure of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company is $100,000. It has 18,000 men employed in construction alone, and its staff employes number al- together 25,000 men,

English merchants in China are alarmed at the movements of Chinese troops. They are stated to have informed the Home Government that China may interfere in the Annam questien at any moment and at any cost.

A circular has been issued by the ex- ecutive of the Fisheries Exhibition at London to British seaports advising a practical exhibition of the American method of mackerel and herring fishing to the coast population.

France has in the Chamber of Deputies 557 representatives. They sat last year 452 hours, making 45 days of 10 hours each. For this they received 3,342,000 francs, making an average of 130 frances 27 centimes each per day, or 15 franes 27 ceutimes each per hour.

The steepest railroad gradient in the world is said to be that of a line from Mon- treux to Glion, a distance of 2,000 feet, just finished by Nicholas Riggenbach, the Swiss engineer who constructed the Rigi Railway, On August 13, M. Riggenbach made the descent with a single car, with- out the cable, in order to demonstrate the efticiency of his brakes, and stopped the arc three times on they way. He is construct- ing asimilar line up the Neilgherries for the Madras Government.

To coal purchasers it is oftentimes a puzzling question to determine whether the requisite amount of coal has been delivered. There is a simple rule for determining the quantity of coal in a bin, shed, or box, which is invaluable in settling this vexed question. A ton of coal contains from thirty-seven to forty-one cubic feet of hard coal, according to its condition as to size, cleanness, and dryness, Clean, dry nut coal ought to contain thirty seven cubic feet to the ton, while coarse, range, or egg coal will contain nearly forty or more. If there is a good deal of dirt in nut coal and it is wet, it will weigh more per cubic foot than clean and dry coal. People buy more water in their coal than they imagine.
