Princess Lovisse.—The birthday of her Royal Highnees Princess Louise was com- memorated at Windsor on the 18th of last month. At intervals throughout the day peals were rung on the bells of St. George’s Chapel and tue Windsor Parish Church, and at noon a Royal salute was fired in the Long-walk by the Royal bombadier.

Famine and the locust plagus are causing great distress abroad, the people of Cesarea being afflicted with the former, while in Asia Minor gardens and vineyards are being devastated by the locusts. An appeal fer help is to be published by the American Board of Foreign Missions, who have ad- vices from their missionaries of the above state of things.

The sales of the Hudson Bay Company’s land bureau for the monthof March aggre- gate $600,000, being an average of $20,000 per day. Some 54,000 acres of farm pro- perty, nearly all within the boundaries of the Province, were sold, besides a quantity ef town lots in Winnipeg and other places throughout the country.

The Russian Minister of the Interior claims to have information of a secret treaty between Germany and Sweden, by which the latter, in the event of war, would lend the former her fleet, receiving Finland as her share of the booty should the allies prove successful.

a place which a few years ago was a complete forest, but to-day by the labor of man has been cleared and is rewardin the owner for his toil, On we p through a few miles of forest whose hu pines tell that man has not yet laid his ruthless hands upon them. The store and coopershop of Augustus Callaghan, Esq., is reached. This gentleman has been doing business here for some years, and has really proved himself a public benefactor. His coopering establishment has given employ- ment to a great number of men, but owing to adverse circumstances he has been com- pelled to close for a short time. During the past summer he entered the lobster end meat canning business, and we trust that his enterprise has proved remunerative, as a business conducted on such a large scale cannot fail to be a benefit to the adjacent settlements. Close by is the carriage and blacksmith shop of Joshua Henderson. This is a young man who has lately started in the business, aud whose gentlemanly bearing and superior workmanship has built for himself a lucrative trade. He cannot fail to succeed, being situated in the centre of a farming community. After a further drive of two miles, Con- way Station looms up. Here a consider- able business is done, but the people are greatly inconvenienced by not having a regular station. It is in the midst of the best lumber part of the country, and the amount of business done in that line is immense. And now the writer must say that everywhere throngh which he passed, signs of industry and enterprise are seen. The people being strictly temperate, no liquor is allowed in their midst. Few places can boast of the Scott Act being so rigidly enforced. Being now late at night, the party returned under the guidance of the driver, Mr. David Panks, a gentleman whose joviality is a sufficient guarantee of a pleasant time. The French Minister of Finance states

that the stockbrokers of Peris have com- pletely recovered their position. Their losses were 160,000,000. francs. At Lyons the liquidation is not completed. and the losses amount to 80,000,000 francs.

Fata, Burnixe Accipent.—On the dist ult., alittle girl, four years old, daughter of Mr. J. Hennigar Tupper, of Rosette, N. S., was so fearfully burned by her clothes taking fire, that death ensued after suffering for eight hours.

Wife-beaters get no sympathy from the Stratford, Ont., Police Magistrate. One of the tribe who graced the dock on the 3rd inst. must have been considerably taken aback on being sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
