Imperial Unity Cherished as the Ideal Future of the British Race.

Loxpox, Nov. 12.

Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, st a banquet given in honor of Cel. Gerard Smith, Governor designate of Western Australia, last night, made a speech, in the course of which he said he looked forward to the time which he ‘elieved was not far distant, when the Australian Colonies would imitate the wise example of Cauada and unite fur a commun purpose. He rejoiced that a step had been taken in this direction by New South Wales. Federation consummate a yreat idea, in which local jealousy and petty ambition would be bur- ied in the foundation of a mighty com- monwealth, destine!, perhaps, at some time which was historically possible, to outstrip the waning greatness and lagging civilization of the older countries of Eur- ope.
