The wind was the well-known “vorther,’ which often kills both mev and animals, that chance to be exposed to its icy breath.

I have endured the rigar of a Canadian winter—have crossed the frozen lakes— have slept upon a snow wreath amidst the wild wastes of Rupért’s Land, but I cannot remember cold more intensely chilling than that I have suffered iv a Texan norther. This extreme dees net arise from ihe actual depression of the thermometer—which at best is put a poor indicator of either heat or cold —I mean the sensation of either. It is more probably the contrast arisiug from the sudden change—the exposure—the ab- sence of proper clothing or shelter—-the stare of the blood with other Jike cirenm- stances, that cause an extreme tempera- ture to be more sevsibly felt. I had oftentimes experienced the chill blast of the vorther, but never more acutely than upon that night. The day had been sweltering hot—the thermometer at noon ranging about the one hundredth degree, while in the first hour of darkness it could net have been far above the twen- tieth. Had I judged by my sensations, I ehould have put it even lower—certaiuly it had passed the freezing point, and sharp sleet aud hail were borne upon the wings of the wind. With nerves de- ranged from want of rest aud sleep— after the hot day’s march—after the per- spiration produced by long exposure upon thea heated surface of the burnt prairie—I perhaps felt the cold more acutely than I shonld otherwise have done My blood seemed to stagnate and freeze within my veins.

I was fain to wrap around my body a bufalo which some careless savage had dropped upon the trail. My followers were not so well furnished. Starting as we had done without any thought of being absent for the night, no prepara- tion had been made for camping out. Only a few of them chanced to have their blankets strapped upon the cantles of their saddles. ‘These were now the fortunate ones.

The norther had roused all of them from their slumbers—had awaked them as suddenly as douches of cold water would have done; and one and all were groping about in the darkness—some seeking for their blaukets—some for such shelter as was afforded by the lee

side of the bushes.

Fortunately, there were saddle blankets, and these were soon dragged from the backs of the horses. The poor brutes themselves suffered equally with their owners. They stood cowering under the cold, with their hips to the cutting blast, their limbs drawn close together, avd their flanks shaggy aud shiviug. Some sheltered them- selves behind the bushes, scarce caring to touch the grass at their feet.

lt would have been easy enough to make a fire—there was dry wood in plenty near the spot, and of the best kind for burning—the large species of mez- quite. Some of the meu were for kind- ling fires at once, regardless of conse- quences, but this desigu was overruled by the more prudent of the party. The trappers were strongly against it. Lights, however, on the aathor- ity of Scientists, are not to be compared in direct proportion, but in proportion to the squares of their powers, and such & com- parison with the case of the use of Gas, its cleanliness, freedom from odor and dangers, renders its use desirable wherever it can be introduced,”

As the above experiments were made with Gas at $3 per 1000 feet, and not consumed through Bray’s Burners, it will readily be scen how much more economical it is to con- sume Gas iustead of Oil, when its price is only $2.63 per 1000 feet as now charged here when cousumed, more especially through Bray’s burners.

Messrs. Goodwin & Co., of Philadelphia, the well-known manatfacturers of Scientific in- struments for testing the illuminating power of Coal Gas, etc., say in their Circular to Gas Companies : “In presenting the Bray’s Stand- ard Patent Siit Unien Burners end Lanterns, for which we are the sole Agents in the United states, to the attention of the public, we are convinced that we are filling a want lon; felt.’ They further add; ** The yield of ligh: ‘rom these Burners is i2 to 20 per cent, gteat.r per cubic foot of Gas consumed than that from any flat flame Barner hitherto in- troduced, [no 4 eod
