‘*In concluding my notice of the cattle show it is proper for me to obgerve that in most respects it was a decidedly successful affair, the precursor, it is to be hoped, of many grander and more imposing displays in the near future. Much of the success of this and former shows has been due to the zealand energy of Mr. A. MecNeiil, the efficient Secretary of the Board of Comis- sioners, who is untiring in his efforts to advance the agricultural interests of his Province. Nor should I omit to mention Mr. Charles UC. Gardiner, who had the cattle show more particularly under his immediate direction, and who, by his intel- ligence, shrewdness and active zeal, has done much to encourage the improvement of stock and to place the agriculture of the Island in the favorable position which it now occupies. To both these gentlemen I tender iny hearty acknowledgments for the ready courtesy with which they advanced the object of my visit to P. E. Island.

In his excellent speech at the opening of the Exhibition the Lieutenant Governor, forcibly presented the benefits received from tlie Model Farm. The Patriot has also noticed these benefits. The EXamMINER begs to lend its voice to the chorus of praise; and to suggest: (1) that steps be taken towards the erection on the farm, of new and suitable buildings, and (2) that the farm be elevated into an Agricultu- ral Coliege having attached to it at least one Professor of Agriculture, with a chair at Prince of Wales College and Normal School.

With regard to the first suggestion we need not say anything. The present build- ings are disgraceful to the farm and the Province; and we are pleased to know that the Government, in conjunction with the Stock Farm Commissioners, are at last con- sidering plans and estimates.

Witi: regard to the secondjsuggestion, we do not deem it necessary to dilate upon the advantage to the Island of the presence of such a man as Professor Sheldon. Nor do we think it necessary to prove that the salary of a Profeasor of Agriculture might, with propriety, be bourne by the pub lic at large. The Province is now pay- ing large sums to teach gifted few a knowledge of Latin, Greek and Mathematics, that their minds may there- by be trained, and that we may, through them, receive honor abroad. If this be right, surely itis also right that the Proy- ince s ould teach the youth who intend to stay at home and work their father’s farms, how to farm on scientific principles—how to compete successfully with the farmers of the other provinces of the Dominion. We commend this suggestion to the attention of the Board of Education. As the Lieunt.- Governor has remarked—as every one who knows anything about it must know—the farm has already been an_ inestimable benefit to the Province. But how much greater would be the advantage of it, if, in addition to annually sending out detach- ments of well-bred horses, cattle, sheep and p gs, it also distributed throughout the Island, young men, having a scientific as welias a practical knowledge of agri- culture.

A lively discussion on the paper read by Mr. McLean in the forenoon followed-—at the conclusion of which C. H. Ives, of Cornwall, read an excellent paper on Eye- teaching, showing the importance of a proper use of the blackboard, wall-maps, charts and object-lessons in conveying in- struction to the youthful mind threugh the medium of the eye. Atthe conclusion of the discussion on this paper the convention adjourned to meet at 8 o'clock for a public meeiing, with which the exercises of a very pleasing and profitable convention were con- eluded.
