DOVER, England, July 30 - (AP) - A 54-year-old Scotsman swam the English Channel to- day. the third man to do it in two days.

Ned B Burnic, an Edinburgh science teacher who made the

crossing from France to England last year, did it the other and linrder way yesterday.

But Philip Mickman, 20, a Br- ton, who followed Barriie on thr England-France crossing, gave up eight miles off the French coast. Mickman iiad -been in the water 14 hours when his handlers ord- ered him into a boat because of heavy seas. The young Briton swam from France to England two years ago and sought to duplicate B'irnic's Channel double.

Barnie'ii successful swim today made him the fourth man in his- tory to swim the 21-mile stretch of treacherous water in both dir- ections.

DETROIT. July 30 -(AP) -Wil- liam G. (Billy) Evans Saturday announced his resignation as ex- ecutive vlce-prcsident and general manager of Detroit Tigers effect- ive at the end of the season and the club said. Charlie Gchringer. one of its all-time greats on the playing field, would be his succes- sor.

The surprise announcementcame as the Tigers were on an eastern road trip and staggering through their worst season since Evans took over nearly five years ago. The club currently is only a game ahead of sixth place Washington.

Evans, 51, said he would leave the Tigers Oct. 1. but he doesn't know if he'll retire.

"I can always pull out my type- writer ancl return to newspaper writing." he said.

Owner Walter O, Briggs said Gehringer was the only man con- sidered for the position.

Reached on a golf i.-oiirsc, (.eli- ringer disclosed that Red Rolfe would be back as manager next season.

Gehringer ended a 19-year car- eer with the Tigers in 1942 and now is a partner in a manufact- urlng business.

Quiet. soft-spoken. Ge-hringer was one of the game's greatest second baseman. He-had. ii lifetime bat- ting average of .321 and in 1937 was named the American League s most valuable player. The holder of numerous other records. he batted .321 in three World Sezics and .500 in six all-star games. He was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. N. Y., in 1949.

Evans came to the Tigers in De- cember, 1946. after ll ion-: cnreer in baseball. His salary was a re- ported 52,000 this year.

Six Monireal Baseball Teams Are ,Suspeiided

MONTREAL. July (.3-(CP) -

City and police otficials said Saturday that six baseball teams a-ilegedly affiliated with Com munist orgnizations have been suspended and. if proof is found. others may be suspended from playing in Moniii-ea-1's parks and playgrounds.

George Maritha, director of parks and playgrounds, suspend- ed the N-Flycrs more than a month ago. following arrest of three members of the National Federation of Labor Youth, which sponsored the team.

They were picked up at Jeanne Mance Park for collecting funds without a permit and now are

on bail awaiting trial at the Sc-ptemlber assizes. Police claim the funds were for Communist

Party use and not for the base- ball team.

More recently five teams. com- prising the entire international Softball League, were suspended.

This action followed coin- plainis that members of the ieams were openly distributing Com-

munist propaganda at Jeanne Mance Park. ' These teams were affiliated

with the Fur and Leaihcr Work- ers Union. the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians. the Slovak Sporting Club, the United Jewish Peoples Order. tnrl the United Electrical Workers Union.

Police said the purpose behind formation of the Communist teams was to attract non-Com- muniats to the cause and obtain signature to the Stockholm

Says U. S. Hockey league To Suspend

OMAHA. Neb.. July 30 2. (AP) - Floyd Olds. sports editor of tiic Omaha World Herald, said Saturday, "it appears all but oertain" that the United States Hockey League "will vote to suspend operation for one year."

League directors meet here Wednesday. Olds, in his World- Herald column. predicted the de- cision will be made then.

"The time for the start oi practice is (naming hear." he ex- plained. "No delays can be made. The league bones will have to be ready to operate at this hudd or give up the ghost." .
