The railway committee of the Privy | Council to-day, decided upon the case to go

to the Supreme Court for an opinion on the question whether a railway chartered by |the Manitoba Government had power to cross the C. P. R. tracks. Mr. Gormally, representing the railway commissioner of Manitoba, said that gentleman did not now recognize the jurisdiction of the railway committee. His representations were of uo avail, Martin having placed himself out j of court by asking the committee to sanc- | tion the crossing. WINNIPEG, Novy. 2. | The Northern Pacific brought in a special excursion train to-day filled with men. They went on tothe crossing. No collision between the two forces has occurred yet, but it is bound to come if the Government carry out their determination.

Lonvon, Novy. 2. Mr. Balfour addressed a Liberal Unionist conference at Wolverhampton to-day. He was jubilant over the Conservative victor- ies in the municipal elections, and said they proved that unionism was progressing. The Unionists were defeating the Gladston- ians even in strongholds like Leeds. He said the policy of the government was win- ning all along the line. Crime in Ireland has been reduced almost to the level of ’81. He thought the outory over evictions ab- surd. A hundred thousand persons were evicted in New York yearly without com-

Montreal, Nov. 2. The customs authorities have detected a series of frauds committed on the depart-

Nine shil- ings and three-pence to nine shillings and six- genes per cent. is quoted. The best Cali- ornian is only 8s 5d, and the best Russian, which should compete with the Manitoban, only 8s 3d.

Tae Frvat Votume.—The final volume of the new edition of the Encyclopedia Britan- nica will be published in a few weeks. The work consists of thirty four volumes, and has taken fourteen years to bring out. Besides the editors, Dr. Robinson Smith and the late Prof. Baynes, 145 contributors have been en- gaged thereon. The first edition of the Encyclopedia appeared in 1771, and the pre- sent issue is the ninth.

Our or tHE Ice Prison.—The steam whaler Brasher arrived at San Francisco from the Arctic regions, last Friday. She a that the thirteen whalers with crews of about 500 men, which were caught in the ice pack the last of September are safe. On October 2, after the vessels had been imprisoned nine days, a gale sprang up and the ice began to break. The whaling captains took the first opportunity to release their vessels, and in a day or two all were safely out of the ice and on their was to the whaling rendezvous.

FoorsaLit.—In the game of football played at Victoria Park, on Saturday, between the Abegweits and the St. Dunstan’s teams, the latter were victors by a score of two trys to nothing. The Ahegweits began play with thirteen, and before their full team had ar- rived the St. Dunstan's team had secured the only points madein the game. Except as above stated a succession of scrimmages and numerous bloody faces were the features of the game.

Sr. Perer’s Coxcert.—This concert will be held in the Y. M. C. A. Hall, on Monday night, the 27th inst. Doors will be opened at 7.30. Concert begins at 8. Prof. Earle, Mr. Vinnicombe, Revs. 8. Weston-Jones and Fred. E. J. Lioyd have promised to assist. Romberg’s Toy Symphony, which was recently given by the most eminent musicians of the age, in the Crystal Palace, London, England, will be performed by eleven ladies and gen- tlemen. Tickets may now be obtained at all the city drug stores; price 35 cents. Pro- gramme will be published a few days previous to the concert.

We think every one of them good, and would have difficulty in deciding which of the twelve we prefer. With the exception of the first they are set to Hymns 24; 191, 245, 391, 255, 306, 102, 401, 436, 223, and

332 of Hymns A & M ; the first is written

Fatal to Farmers.

Reaping, Pa., Nov. 2. This afternoon, on the farm of Jonas Spayd, in Berne township, this county, a steam threshing machine boiler exploded, killing five persons and injuring many more. The bodies of all five killed were hurled 50 feet and terribly mutilated. ‘The barn was completely wrecked, and the

force of the explosion was felt for miles.

Hon. Michael Henry Herbert has been appointed British charge d’affairs at Wash- ington. Lord Sackville will come to Eng- land immediately on leave of absence. It is understood the government will allow the case to rest until after the presidential election.

Tue Worst Fearep.—The Summerside Agriculturist says it is reported that Peter Murphy, ‘‘the well-digger” of Sea Cow Head, has been drowned. He was in Summerside on Thursday, and was heard that night shout- ing by Capt. Walsh, Lighthouse keeper. Sat- urday morning his boat was found on Fifteen Point.

A Kinpiy Act.—Conductor Keays, of the Intercolonial, who died a few days ago, left his widow in straightened circumstances. Four of his fellow-conductors, with the assist- ance of Joe Edwards, of the Windsor and Annapolis railway, came to her relief by col- lecting $193.80, which they presented to her

A CiericaL ScanpaL.--A minister who recently settled in a large church at Glas- gow, Scotland, had greatly pleased his con- gregation by eloquent sermons, but some sharp people presently complained that the pastor's extempore prayers: and prayer meeting addresses were amazingly inferior to his pulpit discourses, so these worthy persons having their suspicions thus excit- ed, procured a large supply of the latest American sermons and discovered that the minister had been preaching the discourses of some of the most eminent pulpit orators in the United States.

Sir, — Having had vecasion tocross the har- bor in the steamer Southport I consulted the published time table to learn that the hour of departure was 4 o'clock ; but on arrival at the wharf 1 was surprised to learn that the hour had been changed, and that the steamer had sailed an hour previous. This shows a surprising want of enterprise or appreciation of printer’s ink on the part of the able Superintendent of Public Works. The failure to advertise the changed time table, in view of the low ad- vertising rates charged by Tae Examiner, savors too much of cheese paring.

Another failure must be added to the long list of unhappy unions between European titles and American dollars. All Paris is now talking about the sudden terminatien of the honeymoon of Count and Countess Di-Mont- calironi nee Miss Virginia Knox, of Pittsburg. The marriage was celebrated at Pittsburg a few weeks ago with great elcat, and the pair left on a wedding tour of Europe. Long be- fore they had got to Paris the bride made the discovery that her husband, besides being penniless, was an inhuman brute. While she supplied him with money he treated her civilly, but when she shut down on him at the hotel in Paris a hair-pulling match ensued, with the Countess coming out second best. The pair were told they must leave the hotel at cnce, and they took the early train for Italy. Some of these Counts are not what they are cracked up to be; but the girls like them just the same.
