They were commenting on a Washington dispatch announcing a new customs procedure to enable foreign traders to make certain in advance what their tariff costs will be on shipments to the US.

Under the new procedure, ship- pers to the U.S. will be given a firm ruling on what the duty rate will be if a sample of the com-

fuli shipment. This procedure has been in force in Canada for many years.

But in the United States a pro- cedure. described as "antiquated." has been in. force. A Canadian or other exporter, shipping to the U.S.. was never certain whether the rate of duty would be the same from one month to another. or whether the same rate would apply at one port as it did at an- other.

Scores of such cases have been taken to U. S. courts on behalf, of Canadian exporters. In many. instances decisions of colicctorsi have been reversed. but only after years of court action.

The next step. Canadian officials believe is for the U. S. to obtain Congressional approval of a sim- plification of the entire U. S. cus- toms.

Plans for bringing U. S. cus- toms more in line with the inter- national Trade Organization char- ter aiready have been prepared and likely will be submitted to the next session of Congress.

Passed Away

AYOTT ST. LAWRENCE, Eng- land, Nov. 2 - (Thursday) - (CP) - George Bernard Shaw died this morning.

The 94-year-old playwright's life flickercd away at. 5:05 A. M. (1:05 A.M. A.S.T.).

The end came in his cottage on the outskirts of this tiny village of 110 population. where he had lain unconscious for a day.

The Irish wit came home a month ago to die, as his friends knew, from the nearby Luton Hospital. He had spent 24 days there after suffering a broken left thigh in his garden where he was trimming a fruit tree Sept. l0.

Shaw lapsed into a coma early Wednesday morning. A Church of England rector read the Church's "commendatory prayer for a sick person at the point of departure" later in the day for the one-time professed athiest.

The Church rites were inioncd at Shaw's bedside by Rev. R.G. Davies of Ayott St. Lawrence.

The playwright really was no atheist, even though he often plo- fessed to be. and ”he believed in God." Mr. Davies said.

Shaw, who on his own and fin- ally the world's assessment was the greatest playwright since Shakespeare, became a classic while he was still alive.

OTTAWA, Nov. 1 -(CF) - Prime Minister St. Laurent in- dicated tonight that part but not all of the army's special force will go to Korea.

Mr. st. Laurent, questioned by reporters after a Cabinet meeting. said he felt "quite sure" that some portion of the force will go to Korea, presumably for nccupation duties. But he added that under circumstances as they now stand. he did not feel it would be the most useful role for the whole force.

This tied in with authoritative reports in Ottawa that arrange- ments are being made with the Ur-riled States to train the bulk of the 11.000-man force at some U. 5. base this winter and then send it to Europe next year.

Roughly 1.000 men. it Ls report- ed. will go to Korea for occupation duties.

Mr. St. Laurent said Defence Minister Claxton will bring back with him Friday from Washington the views "of our associates"-that is. Canada's Atlantic Pact allies- on where the force could best be used. The final decision, of course. will be Canada's to make Ind this will be placed before Parliament for approval.

The winter irainir.-g by the feat of the troops may be done at Fort Lewis, Wa5h.. near Tacoma. the vast military base where a 100- man regular force staging party already is established to clear the force through to Korea.

Fort Lewis is one of a number which have been under consider- ation in Washington in talks be- tween 1vlr..Claxton and American officials. The problem is to fit the Canadian force into the great up- heaval arising from U. S. mobiliz- niion.

The units are supposed to be in Fort Lewis by Nov. 15 or so and to sail a week or so later-if they go. Meanwhile an advance party of some 345 men is proceeding across the Pacific in an American ship travelling in the secrecy of wire- less silence. Its destination is Korcn.
