' The lecture delivered by Finlay McNeill,

KEsq., on Friday night last, in the Reform ‘Club Hall, was very well attended. His |subject was “Our County.” The lecture 'was a very interesting one, and well de- livered. The order kept was not as good as it might have been.

A vacaney has occurred in the Town Council, owing to Thomas Beattie, Esq., having resigned his seat. The election to fill the vacancy takes place in about two weeks time. As yet no one has been open- ly named for the position, although there are several aspirants for the honor.

Unlike his right reverend brother of Cape Town, Bishop Colenso does not en- dorse Sir Bartle Frere’s conduct in precipi- tating the war with the Zulus. In some correspondence recently published, his Lordship says that the course of the High Commissioner made it simply impossible for Cetewayo to avert war. ‘That the Zulu King was prejudged, he declares, is plainly seen in the light of recent events. The bishop-writes very strongly. To his mind, he says, ‘‘ it is a question which vitally con- cerns our character as a Christian people whether or not we have determined from the first to subjugate or annex the Zulu country without regard to the right or wrong of the case, but with a view to ul- terior objects considered to be desirable for the Zulus as well as for ourselves—doing good that evil may come. I don’t question that in what was originally awarded to the Zulus in accordance’ with the - report, they received the very ut- most it would have been .possible for any just arbitrator to give them. But then this award was emptied of its whole meaning for the Zulus, and reduce to a mere name by the memorandum afterwards published, and which, though ‘ prematurely publish ed,’ had been prepared and signed a_fort- night before the award had been formally communicated to Cetewayo. 1 understand that Cetewayo, who was greatly pleased at first with the award asa proof of English love of justice and right, when he became aware of what was really intended, exclaim- ed against the mockery of the whole pro- ceeding, and said very emphatically—‘ They have flung over my head the skin vf the beast while they are eating all. the meat.’” Coucluding, the bishop declares that, above all, he mourns the loss of England’s charac- ter ainoig the native tribes of South Africa a3 an honorable nation, a just and truth- loving people, upon whose plighted word the Zulu King and peopie have been for so many years implicitly relying. |

The Englishman writes articles favorable to the English policy, and the Greek edit r put them into Greek, but at the same time he prints his own articles at- tacking the new English masters of the ancient Greek island.

Mr. Dustan has just received a cablegram from his Nottingham friends, stating that Mr. Myer is coming out to Halifax imme- diately to give his personal attention to the erection of the Sugar Refinery. Mr. Dustan says that steps will at once be taken for its speedy erection.
