Horse Marxet.-- Late advices from Boston report that the horse market is very flat just now, and prices obtained are far from satisfactory. Several good Cena- dian animals have been offered at the stables, but the buyers had the advantage as every day seemed to be bargain day in this line.

A New Device for shunting cars on side tracks of railways has been patented by Mr. Ewen McLewen, of O'Leary Station, P. E. Island. This wil! do away with the dar- ger of gill-poking cars along blind side tracks which has caused so many accidents to railwaymen. It is attached to the en- gine and moves cars forwards or backward without danger.

Tae Cocniax Case—An _ exchauge says: It is now announced that prosecutor Holtzman of Indianapol’s, Ind, is deter- mined to thoroughly investigate the cir- cumstances of the marriage of Charles Coghlan to the woman who is alleged to have been his wife previously to his marry- ing Kuehne Beverage. It is said that the relatives and friends of Miss Beveridge are urging him to take s:eps in the matter, and have agreed to pay any expenses that may be incurred in getting the record of a first marriage in England. An agent will soon visit Prince Fdward Island to secure evidence of importance in that quarter.

Marshal Sir Donald Stewart, and Major Geweral Sir John MeNeill. The latter visited this Island with the late Sir Jobn Young prior to Confederation, and subse- quently visited Canada as Equerry to the Princess Louise and the Duke of Con- naught. Sir Donald Stewart received his appointment as Field Marshal on the Queen’s Birthday honors of the 24th of May last. Lord Mount-Stephen, who looks on Canada as his home, will remain for some months. The distinguished party, with friends, will fish salmon on the Meta- pedia, and may probably visit the Mari- time Provinces during their stay in Can-

A letter was read from Rev. Wm. Scott, renewing the application made by himself and Mr. Geo. i. Foster upwards of a year ago regarding the erection of a sewer in the vicinity of his premises on Rochford Street, in order that the drainage might be improved. He related the number of cases of fever that had occurred in his family recently, and expressed the hope that the Board would grant his request.

A letter was read from Captain Ronald | MeMillan, asking permission to run a} railway track across Prince Street, about | fifteen feet south of present crossing, to | connect railway yard with his wharf, he to make good crossings at the track and satisfactory gradings at the landing.
Councillor Tanton moved that the mat- ter be referred to the Public Property Committee, said committee to have power to grant the request if considered advis- able after consultation with Mr. McMillan and the Recorder.
Councillor Fennell moved in amend- ment that the matter be referred to the Mayor and Street Committee, te be dealt with as they see fit.
The amendment carried.
A bill of $10.05 from McLeod, Morson & McQuarrie, for services rendered some time ago in connection with a seizure, was referred to the Finance Committee and the Recorder.
A letter from Philip Coyle, asking com- pensation for certain iand expropriated by the city, was referred to the Street Com- mittee and the Recorder.
A petition from certain residents cf Richmond and West Streets, asking that these two streets be connected by a road- way, was referred to a special committee composed of Councillors Taylor, Douse and Fennell, to ascertain cost of roadway and sewer, and report at next meeting. Councillor Taylor moved that the City Surveyor be instructed to put down a plankway on the east side of Hillsborough Street, between Mark Wright’s showroom and Parson’s forge.
Councillor Fennell moved in amend- ment that the matter be left in the hands of the Street Committee.
The amendment carried.
A request from William G. Mugford, asking permission to operate a photograph saloon on Market Square, was not granted. Councillor Taylor gave notice that at | the next regular meeting he would move | that $10 a month be granted John Mc- | Court, an old and true servant of the city who had been laid aside for some time past owing to illness, said grant to con- tinue until he is able to resume work.
A letter was read from John P. Joy asking for a license to operate a_ billiard hall on Water Street, near the Queen Hotel. The clerk was instructed to write Mr. Joy, referring him to the by-law in such cases made and provided.
A petition from a number of citizens asking for amendments to the by-law regarding sign-boards, posts, etc., was also read. No action taken.
A letter was read from W.S. Stewart, stating that if the awning in front of the place of business of ex-Councillor Morris, ; on Lower Queen Street, was removed, as | threatened, the city would be held responsible.
Mayor Dawson said the City Surveyor had told him that everyone had complied with the law in this respect except Mr. Morris. His Worship also called attention to certain other encroachments on the eireet in the shape of fences.
Coun. Hooper, according to notice given at laet regular meeting, moved that the sum of $100 be granted the Provincial Rifle Association.
Coun. Douse moved in amendment that the Recorder give a written opinion re- | garding the legality of this grant at next | meeting.
A good dealof discussion followed, after which Coun. Douse’s amendment was put and Jost and the main motion carried.

Our Marxet.—The market to-day was fairly well attended, and the supply a little above the average. Butter, fresh, has dropped to from 17e to 20c; eggs sold at from 8c to 9c per doz; fowl at 50c to 55c per pair; hay at from 65c¢ to T5e per ewt; oats at 40c per bush; lobsters at 2c to 10c each; mackerel at 8c to 12c each; codfish, fresh, at™10c to l5c each. Potatoes, which last week sold at from 40c¢ to 45c per bush, have dropped to 30c. Other articles remained unchanged.
