The elections of yesterday were a surprise to the Conservatives.

Though the late Government is sustained, two of its members were defeated—Angers by thirteen, and Baker by sixteen.

Chauveau, amemor of the Joly Govern ment, is defeated.

The Conservatives will have a majority

of five or six in the new house.

The Conservatives gained six seats and

lost fifteen.

Money was freely used in all directions by Ronyes.

The Liberai-Conservative party will-cer- tainly regain all the seats in the next Do-

minion Blection.

The good town of Truro rejoices in the possession of a worthy cititizen named Bernard McNutt, who at one time possessed considerable property, but who now, though still retaining his respectability, is in some- what reduced circumstances, The old man has some peculiar ideas, and one of these is pat he has discovered perpetual motion. e had in his house a curiously construct- ed machine, the perpetual motion of which he rose to explain to each and all who had callel'in a respectable manner. the Government are the order of this week. A popular meeting was held at Bradford on Monday in support of the Government, at which Gathorne Hardy, Secretary fer In- dia, spoke. it was followed yesterday by meetings at Manchester, at which John Bright spoke, and at Brierley Hiil, in op- position, To-morrow another demonstra- tion hostileto the Government will be held at Birmingham.

The whole energy of the opponents of the Government in the North and Centre of England wili thus be heard in combined protest against the policy of the Govern- inent.

At the Manchester meeting 1,800 dele- gates from Liberal organizations in_ the north of England were present. Joseph Chamberlain (Radical), member of Parlia- ment for Birmingham, spoke at Brierly Hall. The speeches of Bright and Cham- berlain directly face the issue raised by the Government. They ask the country net to choose between the varicus courses for asserting British interests in the East, but to act on the principle that we have no in- terests there at all which are worth the cost of war. They further asked it nat to de- cide how far it is prepared to maintain ex- isting treaties, or by what means existing engagements can be reconciled with ex- isting fadts, but to pronounce that the ex- isting treaties are an utter mistake.

Rumors of a dissolution of Parliament are again rife ; and itis said that the Conser- vative Associations have received secret in- structions to prepare for such a contin- gency,
