Prickly Porky and Mrs. Porky never had spoiled any of their children by too much attention. The porcupine folk do not believe in fussing over their children. They give them such attention as they need, but that is all. So. porcupine children are never spoiled child- ren. They never make nuisances of tin-iiiselves by demanding a lot of attention.

Ohatterer the Red Squirrel was one of the first to satisfy curiosity. He promptly helped spread the news. His cousin, Happy Jack the Gray squirrel. didn't believe Ghatterer. Neverthe- less, he went to see. and of course seeing was believing. Ltghtfoot the Deer heard about it, and came over to call. So did Mrs. Lightfoot. They had once had a pure white fawn, so the fact that Mrs. Porky had a white baby wasn't so hard for them to believe.

Old Man Coyote appeared one day. Baby Prickles happened to be up in the tree where his mother was, so he was quite safe, But it was annoying to have Old Man Coyote around. He probably was too wise to touch Baby Prickles should he have the chance, but he might think that because Baby Prickles was so small he would be quite harmless. Both Fteddy Fox and Mrs. Reddy were visitors. Bus- ter Bear came around. He pre- tended that he was going to climb the tree. Mother Porky was really worried then. She sent-Baby Prick- les as far out on a limb as he could get without danger of falling off. However. Buster Bear had no intention of. getting a mouthful of quilts, even the small quills of a baby porcupine. He wasn't hungry enough for that. He did I. lot of grumbling and growling, and pretending. That was simply his way of enjoying himself. Many feathered folk came to see the white baby. and of course they all had a lot of comments to make. There was s. lot of chitterlng and chattering and calling back and forth. It was not at all to Moth- er Porky's liking. she likes quiet and solitude. All this excitement troubled her much. She complained about it to Prickly Porky.

"Why don't you go off and leave the youngster in take L'El'0 of him- self?" asked Prickly Porky. Which, you will agree. was no way for a father to talk.

Mother Porky merely grunted. Baby Prickles was not yet old enough to be left all by himself.
