For close upon a quarter of a century, you have been connected with the Cathe- dra! choir, and for the greater part of that time you have been its organist and in- structor. We may here say, without in- tending any reproach on those who pre- ceded you in these duties, that you have by your love of music and energy. so contrived it that on thie emall Island of Prince Edward the grand festivals of the Catholic Church are now solemnized with the same classical music of the great masters as inepires with devotion and de- light the faithful who worship in the stately Cathedrals of Europe. To bring this about, no one knowe better than your~ eelf the amount needed, of toil, persever- ance and patience. Hence it seems atrange that so many years of labour on your part should have passed without any public fe cognition from us.

It may be that we, as is the wont with pupils, considered ourrelves the party most in need of sympathy. Butafter the first crude attempts on a new work, when difficulties become softened and the reugh places smooth; whea little by little the mterpretation of the great masters work grew, under your guidance, more and more correct, then it was that we could feel thankful to the skill which pet us in possession of the power to enhance the charms of religion and gladden the hearts of our fellow worshippers.

An Evexntine Wirn Burxs.—A _ very pleasant hour and a half was spent in the basement of Zion Church last evening, the Rev. Mr. Sutherland in the chair, in sing- ing the beautiful songs and reading the poetry of the immorta! Robbie Barns. Mrs Byrne’s solo was a rare treat, and the song by Miss McIntosh was sweetly sung, while the manlv voices of Messrs. Charles Bell, Brent McInnis, James R. Davidson aud James C. Lawson interpreted well the poetical sentiments of Scotland’s bard. Mrs. R. J. Campbe.l’s reading of Whit- tier’s tribute to . Burns was well received; and Mr. Uolin§ MeNeill’s reading of that great temperance poem entitled “T=.m O’Shanter,” was highly satisfactory to all lovers of the Doric, aad was listened to with sustained tnoterest. But the piece de resistance, the reading which brought down the house, was Mies Fiora McKenzie’s, the refrain of which was “iFor She Was Scotch and Su Was {.” The genuire humor and appreciative ren- dition of this selection souvnised the audience; and Miss McKenzie responded to the encore with a reading about the kitehen clock and the happy progress of # courtship, which was _ also capital. The chairman capped the climax by expressing his readiness to tie the naptial knot.

Speaking of encores, woulda’t it he better for Charlotcetown auliences to give up encorirg, or else show some taste and discrimination when doing so? Everyone was excored last evening, the result being that no one was thereby particularly com- plimeated.
