During a thunder storm, a few days ago, says the Boston Post, the lightning came down upon a pasture of Charles Tit- comb, of Kensington, N. H., descending perpendicularly into the earth for about thirty feet, so as to form a well of water. The hole is as big as a barrel, and it was formed, like the holes of the chip-mank, without throwing out any earth.

A brute living in Weld, Maine, was lately convicted of cruelly treating an adopted daughter of 14 years of age. It was his custom on the slightest pretexts, to take the child to the barn, and oe her, whip her with great severity with a ~_ hide, so as to leave deep scars in her flesh. The girl did not disclose these ecruelities until instinct began to teach her to fear even greater enormities.

Ayn Attecep Staver —The brig Bremer was seized in New York tarbor on Tuesday last. She had a cargo consisting principally of water, together with abundant supplies of such provisions as are usually found on board slavers, and timber for the construction of a slave deck. Her company consisted of acaptain, two mates, and thirteen men, a supercargo and two other persons. ‘The captain and supereargo gave very contra- dictory and unsatisfactory replies—one saying that ehe was bound for St. Thomas and a market, while the other stated she would proceed to St. Thomas, and thence to China. There Was no manifest on board.

A Brore Beast.—We see by the Ravenna (Ohio) Democrat that a man named Shem Lewis—this name ought to be Shame Lewis—was convicted of assault and battery on his motherless boy of eleven years, and sent to the peniten- tiray for three years. He struck his boy with a barn shovel, cleaving his sealp to the skull. He then kicked him out of doors, kicked him in the mouth, rubbed his face in the snow —afterwards dragged him into the house, swore he would cut his head off, and made a deadly thrust at him with a butcher-knife, which the boy, by a quick movement escaped. His father then knocked him down, and left him bleeding upon the floor, On a former oecasion Lewis pointed a loaded gun at the boy, and under a threat to shoot him, made him climb a telegraph pole. A short time before the death of his wife, they lost a child. While his wife was on ber. and, as it ‘proved, death-bed, Lewis went to the grave, dug up the child, took it from the coffin, tore off its
