Diphtheria !—how dread the word ! A vuiture fierce for human prey ; Agent of Death ! thy voice is heard ! And sorrow chases joy away ; One wing o’er Melville thou dost wave, — The other spans the lonely grave.

Dark as the night, thy shadows fall

O’er Little Sands and High Bank's Shore ; Flat River, too, has heard thy call ;

But Melville, weep !—thine are no more ; Six graves are fresh ; the silent bell,

The church, the school—their story tell,

O Thou, who feels for human grief,

Modern London.

Last year, according to Coi. Henderson's report, 26,710 new houses; covering a length of eighty-six miles, were built in the metropolitan police area, London, which now contains 4,788,657 persons—the largest number probably ever packed within fifteen miles of acommon centre. Out of this enormous multitude twenty-three chil- dren and one hundred and fifty-four adults were entirely lost. Their disappearance is one of the mysteries of London, upon which but little light is thrown by the fact that fifty-four bodies of persons found dead and unknown and buried before identification. There were three times as many people killed on the streets of London in 1881 as it coat to storm Arabi's position at Tel-el- Kebiz, and ten times as many wounded, the figures “being—killed 252, wounded 3,400. There were 800 fires, 274 suicides, 11 murders, and only three convictions, 470 burglaries and only 91 conviction; 27,228 persons were apprehended as drunk and disorderly—a decrease of more than 8 per cent. since 1881, although there has been an increase of population of over 80,000. The temperance movement seems to be tell- ing at last, even in London—the proportion of apprehensions per 1,000 of population for the last four years being:—1878, 7.809; 1879, 7.345; 1880, 6 345; 1881, 5.698.

Farm Notes.

The largest sheep-owner in Texas is a wowan known as the “Widow Callahan.” Her aheep, more than 50,000 in number, are divided into flocks of 2,000 head each.

The Forest and Stream tell us how a gaag of burglars were betrayed by their dog. The tale runs thus:— After looting a boat- man’s house, the thieves made off with their booty, but unfortunately, omitted to look after their dog, and shut him in the house, where he was found in the morning.

The price of wheat at the present time is creating some consternation in English farming circles. A large farmer in an ad- joining country to Herts has just thrashed out twenty-four acres of good upstanding crop of wheat. The produce is 50 qrs.; 50 qrs. at, say 40s, equal to £100. Rent, rates’ tithes, and taxes and expenses of tillage, harvesting. &c., will cause no profit, but a loss of £100 on the crop, which should be the mainstay of England.

The most succesful sale of Polled Aber deen cattle ever chronicled took place last week, when the entire herd, bred with so much care by the’ late Mr. Walker, Mont- bletton, near Banff, was disposed of. The forty animals disposed of realised £3,911 5s or an average or £97 15s. 7d. The high. est figure realised was 315 gs., paid for a seven-year-old cow, purchased by Mr. Wilken, who was loudly cheered when for 295 gs. he purchased another. For eom. parison, we give the averages at the four previous sales which show the highest aver- ages:—At Montcoffer sala 38 head averaged £49 Gs. 5d.; at Tillyfour 70 averaged £48 Is. 6d ; at Balquharn 36 averaged £56 4s. 8d.; and at Aboyne 32 averaged £50 6s. Mr. Wilken’s purchases were made on be- half of the Hon. H. M. Cochrane, Compton Canada. Then followed the sale of the Advie Mains Polled Herd, which was dis- persed on Tuesday by Messrs. McDonald and Fraser of Perth. Animals of good character and pedigree were much sought after, and many of the stock were bought for exportation to America. Fourteen cows were brought into the ring, and the highest nee was 234 gs. In two-year-old heifers,

he highest was 10) gs. Of nine very superior yearling heifers, the highest price obtained was 325 gs. The average for 42 animals was £88 3s.
