It was condemned long since, and now one of the city sewers runs alongside and above it, and although the water is so offensive people in the neighborhood still use it. Two novel strikes are reported from Cape Town, South Africa, One is of the lawyers, who refuse to do business in court any longer under an crder of the ‘‘taxing master,” an official who determines the rate at which they can tax costs. ‘The strike had not been ad- justed at last accounts. Tho other was a strike of 600 convicts for an improved diet, which, strangely enough, was conceded, and they promised then to go to work—the next day.

Last Sunpay, for the first time in over twenty years, the military bands escorted the troops to and from Church, through the streets of Halifax. The band of the 19th rendered ‘‘Ouward Christian Soldiers,” and ‘‘1 want to be an Angel,” and no one felt amused; the band of the 101st played ‘‘Are you ever going to shoot that Hat?” and “By Killarney Lakes, ” and everyone thought it funny. Carcket.—On Saturday last, the Wander- ers met the Garrison Cricket Club on the grounds of the latter, and defeated them by a score of M41 to 130. It was only a one inniags game, but it was none the less a vic- tory. Kaizer made 564 not out, and Henry 23; Brookfield and Neal also secured double figures. As the Wanderers were at the bat t Illote, nthe day, no less than 65 overs being howled to them, it looked as though the game would proveadraw, At one time the excitement was very great, the officers ap- plauding every little hit for one, and cheering wildly hits for two and three, The game was to close at half-past six, At twenty-nine minutes after six, the Garrison Club were five runs behind and _ had one wicket to go down; and down it went, Major May losing his stumps on the last ball of the last over that was to be bowled. The Wanderers are to be congratulated on their victory. Telegraph Notes.

The Kimball House, Atlanta, Ga., was discovered on fire at five o’clock on the 11th. The guests were notified and all got out safely. The total loss is $1,000,000; insur- ance $200,000,

During a thunder storm at Lincoln, N. B., on the 11th, three boys, who had taken refuge under a tree, were killed by light- ning, and several houses were struck and four persons injured.

A fire on the llth, at Vineyard Haven, Mass., destroyed almost the entire business portion of the place, and over thirty dwell- ings, rendering hundreds of peopie home- less. The loss is estimated at $190,000; in- surance about $65,000.

The famous four-oared shell, in which the St. John fishermen so often rowed to vic- tory and which is at present owned by the Toronto sculler, A. Elliott, was loaned by him to the Toronto senior four, but the men smashed it by running foul of a harbor tug. It is hopelessly damaged beyond repair.

It is thought that the summary convic- tion and severe punishment of the dyna- mite prisoners at Liverpool will have the effect of ending all glycerine enterprises for some time. McDermott, of Brooklyn, is lodged in jail in Liverpool and speculation is rife as to hiscase. A statement that he came over to be an accessor in dynamite cases is disproved by the result. Some per- sons, claiming to be well informed over Government, has evidence that he was im- plicated, during one of his visits to Dublin, with the Phoenix Park censpirators, and notably with ‘number one,” with whom, for a short time, the police confounded him. Itis possible that McDermott pro- poses, by exposing himself to arrest and prosecution by the British Government, to purge himself of the aspersions cast upon him.

The New York Times London special says: —Mr. Bright addressed a large meeting during the week in favor of the measure providing that natives of India may try Europeans, and was followed by a native Hindoo, who spoke with eloquence. There is acloud gathering in India which denotes growing dissatisfaction and unrest; the arrogant hostility of the English against refined and highly education Indians; the late arbitrary and tyrannical imprisonment of @ native editor for harmless and unin- tentional libel, and the abrupt and unex- plained refusal of redress by & higher tribunal at home, all tend to provoke dan- gerous feeling. The Indian pension list alone amounts to over thirty millions of dollars yearly, and the drain of taxation 1s already so burdenseme, as to be of itself almost unbearable. The population on the other hand are intelligent and educated. English principles are growin enormously, and India is beginning to think for itself on English principles and to become conscious of its power.

Direct st am comimunicati-n with the Old Country has been secured by our Island shippers in counection with the above line, as will be seen by advertise- ment appearing in another column. The Montreal Gazette says in connection with this new enterprise :—

“The Halifax Stcam Navigation Company and the New Brunswick Stcamship (‘ompany have amsa!gamated, and will do business under the name of the former. Their first steamer, the “Sicily,” will sail for St. John and Hali- fax from London about the 18th inst. It is the intention to ran four steamers, giving fortnightly trips each way between ths Mari- time Provinces and Great Britain.”

The Halifax Chronicle also says:-—

“In a movement like this a good start counts for much. Let the importing public remember this, and make the beginning of the work successful, by giving the ‘‘Sicily” a large cargo.”’

It is gratifying for us to be able to state that some of our leading firms have decided to cable this week, ordering their goods to be shipped by the‘‘Sicily,”’ which. we are in- fomed, leaves London on the 22nd _ instant. We hope their example will be followed by others in want of goods being landed here early, and that the new Line’s through rates to and from all points of the Island, Great Britain and the Continent will be appreciated by shippers and largely pat- ronized.
