Fine Derpartuest.--The meeting of the Fire Wardens was held, as announced, lus evening. Several bilis were passed, the Chiet Engineer was aathoriz-d to have the eugines and other fire apparatus removed to the new city building, and it was also ordered that the keeper of the room be instructed to have all lights out at ten o'clock each evening, and to see that none but bona fide members of the companies be allowed in the room.

Across Caxapa.—We are pleased to learn that Prof. Bueil has very kindly consented to give his grand spectacular entertainment in tae Lyceum in aid of the funds of St. Vincent de Panl Society, on Tuesday evening next Since his last exhibition here the Professor has addéd to his collection of views, and his entertainment is, therefore, larger and more varied than that of last year. A _ large at- tendance is expected and desired.

Mrs. Southworth, one of Surveyor Coveney’s inspectors, made an ex- amination Che result was that almost half a bushel of farmer's socks and stockings are now in the offive of Surveyor Coveney. The bustle, whose corpulency first aroused sus- picion, was packed with the socks, and two or three dozea pairs were fastened by the toes to one of her skirts.— Boston Post.

Fatal Shipping Disaster.

Sr. Fravie, Que., Aug. 28. On Saturday last the SS. Bathburg, coal laden, on her way from Sydney to Montreal, struck upon a rock at Cape

A fearful storm sprang up on Sun- day night, and the captain was forced to abandon the vessel, taking off with him two lady passengers who were on board The crew, comp sed of seventeen men, was left on board until the morning, when the steamer began to break up and they got off in two small boats, but shortly after they left her bosch boats upset and 15 sailurs out of the 17 were drowned.

Sir John Macdonald is expected here on Thursday, and Hon. Mr. Foster on Satur- day. It is understood that their return has been somewhat hastened by the threat ened complications with Yankee legislators.

The Newfoundland delegates are expect- ed here about the 19th September to con- fer in reference to the proposed union.

The Bangor Fair. Baneoor, Aug. 28.

The first day of the great fair was a grand success in every way. The attendance was 8,000, which is very large tor the tirst day. Phe exhibits in both halls are fair, larger than those of any previous year, and the horse and cattle departinents are especially full in entries.
