PIGS GONE FOREVER ‘

Never in recent memory have the opportunities for social life at UPEI been so limited. For several terms Wednesday night coffee houses Supplemented the traditional Thursday night Pig and Whistles.
At Christmas the coffee houses died because of lack Of student involvement. Now the Pigs, suffering the
same fate, have been cancelled for the rest of the year by the Student Union Executive. As substitutes there will be a spring
co-ed on March 27 and a
beer bash on April l0.
Sue Parlee, head of the UPEI Social Committee, has told the SyN_that she was sorry to see the Pigs go, but that with declining attendance the cancellation
was necessary. Actually, she added, the Pigs were fine all last term and early this term. The drop in attendance was recent, but it was crippling. For six weeks each Pig has been drawing only about sixty people, and eVen that, Parlee‘ noted, is a generous estimate.
The grapevine on campus has it that the Biology Club coat check, which operates at events at the Barn, attracted only eight coats at a recent Pig. Parlee could neither confirm nor deny this rumor, though she readily admitted that the coat check had anything but a booming business.
Parlee is confident that the two remaining events will be successful in spite of their predecessors.

Co-eds are always popular,. and since the one this term is for the Senior Class, seniors will probably participate for the sake
of raising money for Senior Week. Guinness should be popular because it is the final event of the year. In

addition, Guinness has a record at UPEI of drawing heavy attendance.
The Pigs have gone, and it appears unlikely that they will be revived. Guinness's final appearance is being
,billed as a I'beer bash“, and next year's Student Union Executive says it will revise the whole concept of Pig and Whistles. Weekend events are a possibility, and functions may be held less frequently than every week. The name “Pig and Whistle”, according to Parlee, is gone forever. Whatever title evolves next year had better be magnetic to reverse the sad trend of this year's Pigs. ‘
