Mill’s warehouse, a space about ten feet square be- ing burned before the tlames were discovered and extinguished. Had the flames reached any buildingsin the vicinity, the results might have been serious. Never was greater care neccessary than at the present, to prev- ent an outbreak of fire.

A Livety OLtp May.—The Summerside Furmer says ;: An old man, 78 years of age, named John H. Betts, walked all the way from Nine Mile Creek, which is but a few miles from Charlottetown, to Summerside, the first of the week. He had recently come from Bangor, and came here to see after some freight which he expectéd, but, to his great disappointment, it had not ar- rived. The St. Johns pounded Robin- son and Burns for 28 total hits, while Cun- ningham for the home team was only hit for five. Frank White, of the St. Johns, wins the Munro cup offered for the best batting average by a purely amateur player in the league. He has a batting average of 450 runs in nine games. The strikers are as resolute as ever in the stand they have taken. Their pickets display igreater activity and prevented many batches of new men engaged to take places of strikers from proceeding to the docks. There, is a pause in the strike negotiations. Cardinal Manning has postponed his inter- view with the Directors of the Dock Com- panies until to-morrow. Burns is ill from overwork, and is taking a day's rest.

Damage to Property. PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Sept. 11.

he superintendent of the Canada and Atlantic railway has received information from Waterbound City and Atlantie City to the effect that the place is in much _bet- ter shape than was anticipated. The dam- age to property was not so serious as at first reported, and there was no loss of life. It is believed that communication by rail with Atlantic City will be effected to-mor- row. Fifteen houses were washed away at Sea Isle City, including three hotels. The damage to the railroad is heavy. and it will be weeks before they ure put in their for- mer condition.

Stanley Marching On.

Brussecs, Sept. i. The Mouvment Geographique states that Stanley is marching toward Monbassa, after fighting’ his way through the hostile country of Umjora and Ujanda tribes, and conquering the natives. He has, the paper says, established the authority of the British East Africa Company over the country from the Upper Nile to the East Coast. The paper declars that it is doubtful if Emin Pascha is accompanying Stanley to the coast. Ireland’s New Viceroy.

The Earl of Zetland, the newly appoint- ed Viceooy of Ireland, will take the oath of office at Dublin Castle on October Ist. He wiil make his state entry into the city in December.
