Demand for gold in London. however, capping a week of heavy buying, showed only few signs of abatiiig as the price soared to the highest level since May. 1935. The present quotation is just about at the “gold point," when the metal may be profitably shipped to the United States.

MONTREAL, Aug. 14 —(CP)— Butter prices dropped sharply this week on open produce markets according to Dominion Depart- ment of Agriculture reports, los- ing one to 1 1-2 cents in view of both the increasing Canadian surplus and the weakening Lon- don market. Potatoes also were off. easing 10 to 15 cents. Cheese markets, however, held steady while increased demand for eggs resulting from the cooler weather pushed high-grade egg prices a. cent higher.

Creamery butter prints to tall dealers sold for 25 to 25 1-2 cents a. pound and solids for 24 1-2-25. Western butter was of- fered at 23 1-2 wholesale pasteurized butter price to iobbers for No. 1 was 23 cents.

Cheese sold at 14 1-2 for Ont. colored, 13 3-4 for Que. white and 13 3-4—7-8 for Que. colored.

Graded egg shipments in carlots or less sold at 28 cents a dozen for A-lnrge, 26 1-2 for A-medium, 24 for B and 21 l-2—22 for C.

While pressure leached s9- Prcciably against leading issues. and declines, on the whole, were confined to minor fractions. in- termittent rallying attempts met with only feeble response.

The Associated Press average of_ B0 stocks yielded .2 of A point at 47. a low since July 111. The week's drop of 3.5 points was the largest since the period of March 23.

The rush for gold abroad ex- emplified the nervousness over a pos slble German -Caechos flare-up and the price of the metal in London was lifted to a. record peak. Engagements of 39,-. 000,000 of gold at. London for shipment to the United States was announced. the largest from any country for any day since June 10, 1937. Leading foreign curren- cies. though. exhibited a relatively steady tone in terms of the United States dollar, but during the week sterling and the french franc din- ped to new lows for the move.

Activity was dull among Can- adian stocks, with gains outdoing losses. Dome Mines, International Nickel. McIntyre, and Lake Shore all improved fractionallv while Dlstillers-Seagrams and Imperial Tobacco eased.

TORONTO, Aug. 14 —(CP)— Low volume, the smallest since May 28 marked the Toronto ex- change trading in Saturday's short. session and indicated nerv- ousness iimoiig traders resulting from the repeated war scares. In- dustrial and base metal shares weakened and the golds and western oils posted moderate net gains. Only 251,000 shares were traded.

Strength of bar gold indirectly helped the big golds and most of the senior listings firmed narrow- ly. Dome added a half point and Lake Shore 3-8. McIntyre and I-loilliiger closed unchanged. Act- ion in Preston slowed down and the price closed unchanged at 1.- 08. Kerr-Addison had n run up to 2.15 but failed to hold the gain. Hard Rock moved in volume at. a gain of 5 cents and the close was up a few cents for Brulorne, Central Patricio, East Malartic, Jelilcoe, Sylvanite, Wright-Har- greaves and Chibougomau, Chest- ervlllc, Pamour, Pickle Crow and Teak Hughes were down.

International Nickel dipped moderately and recovered while Noranda closed 1-2 down. Other

leaders were steady and in the cheaper base metal group the close was down a few cents for Waite-Amulet, Pend Orellie nnd Chromium. Silver shares held steady in slow action.
