West opened his top diamond and East won with the jack. Then. knowing that declarer still had at least the ten of diamonds, East cashed the ace and led a third round.

Deciarer gave due thought tohis play at this point. He could oi course rurt high draw trumps. and lead his singleton club. put- ting in the jack in the hope oi Iorcing the ace from East, but South felt that East had both the ace and queen of clubs. Also, there was a chance, however slight, that West had held three diamonds and could not ruif this trick. 80 de- clarer threw off his singleton club.

West oi course ruffed. and his natural return was the ten of clubs. Dummy's jack forced East's queen. and south ruffed. Declarer now entered dummy with a trump and carefully led the club king through East. who of course cover- ed to prevent a discard. Now South simply ran off every trump -and hopedi
