On Monday evening last when all the students and professors had reassembled after the holidays, he was presented with the following address :—

Great events should always be suitably reccgnized. [on this our predecessors in St. Dunstan’s College have left us many and praiteworthy examples, which the preseat vceasion bids us follow.
While we disbanded and went forth from Old St. Dunstan’s to enjoy the Chr stmas holidays in our respective
homes, you, having finished a lengthy re- treat, left her walls to en'ist in the service of Him, the aniversary of Whose birth were about to commemorate. As co- laborers and students’ we would be thoughtless, indeed, if we permitted this occasion to pass without congratulating you upon your elevation to the holy pr:est- hood, and expressing our sincere wishes | that you msy long be spared performto the arduous duties of your sacred calling. What nobler duties can be conceived? The American line steamer Paris started from New York on Wedoesday in an at- tempt to cross the Atlantic with the aid of one screw, her other screw being disabled. Contrary to expectations, the Bebring Sea commission will not sit in Sao Fran- cisco. N.R. Hatris, who has been assi+t- ing the commission ia Victoria, B. Three men armed with :ev lvers held up @ saloon on State street, Chicago’s busiest thoroughfare, at half past eight Monday night. The situation at Rland Village I, coal mine was practically unchanged up o noon on Monday. Crowds of miners | gathered on the principal street in t: forenoon and after being addressed by en agitator who advised bloodshed advanced upon the mine. Troops under Lieut. Hardin waited until the mioers advanced to within @ hundred feet of the building-, when he-commanded them to halt; they instantly obeyed. After hooting at the guards the mob returned to the village. Miners were parading the streets almost constantly and nearly everyone had a weapon concealed upon his person. Miners were partly quieted at noon by a promise from Manager Hakes, oi the coal company, that he would probably settle the question of their wages aad grievances Monday.

The Hon. Louis Henry Davies, minister of marine and fi<heries in the Dominion oabinet, has sprung a sensation on the people of Canada. An Associated) Press dispateb in another column says he is “most outspoken against the present
methods of floating mining schemes in British Columbia.” Now this note ef
warning, as we suppose Mr. Davieg» calls it, Would come from him with a great dea) better grace if he had vixited the mining districts, like his colleague, the Hon. Mr. Blair, and taken some pains to post him - self on the question. Any information which he may have on the subject. must necessarily be at second-hand, and as_ it was probably acquired in Vancouyer or Victoria it is not probable that it is either well f unded or accurate.

funny. Seeing that a rich strike means an advance in price it is e trifle beyond us to figure out just how the westerner is going to make money in that way.
Mr. Davies evidently has all his ex- perience of stocks yet to get. Haz he warned people not to buy C. P. R. shares because those on the inside, the directors in this case, know in advance when a dividend is going to be paid and when it i+ going to be passed? Everybody, except perhaps Mr. Davies knows that directors of railroad companies and their friends often take advantage of this knowlege and buy or sell stocks as the case may be, reaping a goodly harvest from the advatice or desliae when the news becomes public.
Mr. Davies is out of bis element. He should confine hi- attention to fish.

The Indian Famine Fund.
