Siz,—It is whispered around that the Government has taken this bridge off the contractor's hands, and paid him in full. Surely this cannot be a fact / But if so, it is certainly amusing to learn sume of the vile ways that the Government adopt in order to satisfy their clamoring friends. The writer has had sume little experience in bridge building, and having an oppor tunity of examining the specification for }this work, has nu hesitation whatever in }pronounciung it the wurst botched job I jhave ever seen. The fact is any person observing the work would consider it a fair jobof repairing, but woud never dreani that the structure was a new one. The material used is very inferior and the | workmanship is still worse. I look upon i us a& novelty in bridge building, and any }one paying a visit to it will, without doubt, | be requited for both time and trouble when | they gaze on such a curiosity. The Gov- ;ernment by this time shou'd be convinced that they hsve sure’y caught a Tartar in ‘Brainy Bill” the contractor and his co adjutor the ‘Grand Scribs.” They had great fault to find with Mr. McKianon’s qualifications as a contrector, but I con. sider him a ‘*Robert Fulton” in comparisen with these beauties. Save us from our friends.

One of the most pleasant social events of the season took place here recently in the form of a drive to WeSable, where a grand picnic was held on the beautifnl grounds of Jas. Palmer, Esq. Shortly after arriving, ‘the ladies proceeded to load the tables 'with the good things provided which in- | deed would more than please the most crit- jical epicure. Having done ample justice ito them, the lads and lasses betook them- _selves to the green to engage in the enter- tainments of the day. The first was a ‘game called “The tour maidens keep |ahead,” in which a young lady took the leading part, and Mr. H. McLean acted | the “spirit hunting for the rose” in splen- did fourm. Mr J McLean recited an ‘‘Epistle to Davie” with grand effect, followed by | Mr. B Robertson with ‘‘He came to my re- lief” in excellent style. The redoubtable '**Professor John” came next with ‘‘Rob- i bed on the passage” with his usual vigor, and last but not least came Mr. S. McNeill rendering “‘I’m off to the north with my dearie” with great force. A young lady recited an extract from Tennyson, and on repeating the passage

—_ | Pownal Notes. nonteee . { The principal event of the past week here’ was the exchange of Teachers in the Pownal School (advanced dept.) Mr. J. B. Pratt retiring to attend College, Mr. Malcom Jones takiog his place. I might say en passant, that its speaks well of the Pownal Scool District, that the two past andthe present teachers are natives of the district, Mr. Jones although @ young men gives evidence of ability of the work. There was great disappointment among parents and scholars when Mr, Pratt’s inten- tion was made known, as he was engaged for the year, and was giving perfect satisfaction. So attached were his pupils they could not allow him to depart withoui a token of thei: appreciation, and to this end two of the young ladies were deputed a committee to procure the needful, which service they per- foumed promptly and successfully, nearly evéry pupil contributing. Mr, Albert Gay kindly drove the said young Misses to Ch’towu to procure the present, also giving a liberal donation, This is praiseworthy, Mr Gay not having children attending school. Then on the last day that Mr. Pratt wielded the birch, he was presented with a very beau- tiful and costly writing desk and an address. Mr. Pratt made a very feeling (verbal) reply. There were many eyes that were more than moist. Thus Po as lost, for the present at least, the of one of her most amiable and acc young men, -CoM, (City p ase copy.)

The repeal of the German regulations against American hog products has strongly affzcted the Liverpvol provision market. Leading merchants are reluctant to sell pending an expected rise. The hope is expressed that France will remove her restrictions on American pork.
A detailed account of the horrors at the Weston insane asylum in West Virginia have been made public. Suictdes have oc- curred from time to time, it is alleged, among the inmates, and they all have been attended by the most horrible circum- stances. Men killed themselves by boiling to death and suspension by ropes from windows. All this was done in sight of the guards and no investigation was made.
The project of “Australian confederation has encountered a rebuff in the return by New South Wales, the senior Antipodean colony, of a parliamentary majority opposed to federation in any fourm; and in the re- fusal, which is also announced, of New Zealand to become a member of the pro- posed commonwealth. Opposition to the project in both colonies comes mainly, it appears, from the workingmen, whose objection to it has its ground and origin in a fear that confederation would involve the support of the poorer colonies by those that are more presperous, and that the latter would be cal-e:! upon to shoulder the debts cf the former.
It is satisfactory to noie that visitors from Great Britain having once seen Canada like to come back.
