We all realize and am able to reo- ognlae the changes that take place in ourselves or others when we or they are ill. The eye loses its lustre. the cheeks sink, the body loses its weight. We take this all for grant- ed knowing that the body is fighting the illness and must give up some of its strength and flesh in doing so. '

What we do not realize or recog- nize is that when an injury occurs to the body—a broken bone, a sprained joint. a. wound of any kind, similar flesh and strength is lost.

Dr. D. P. Cuthbertson. Glasgow,

describes the various changes that take place in the body after injury. There are two distinct phases (l) the initial or early phase of de- pressed vitality or shock and (2) the phase of renewed activity of the body processes including the healing pro- cess. During the first period—shock or depressed vitality—that results from physical injuries, there occurs within the first 24 hours a more or less complete stoppage of the urine. Fol- lowing this period of lessened urine. the volume of the urine with its in- creased contents gradually increases and is at its highest during the fourth to the eighth day. Thus the body may lose more than '7 per cent of its nitrogen in the first ten or twelve days after a serious injury. Together with the loss of this nitro- gen (the principal substance in the muscles) there is also a loss of sul- phur and phosphorus-two other im- portant parts of the structure of the bod

Observations on what happens in pneumonia-wasting of the body tis- sues-shows that the changes are similar to what happens when an injury occurs.

Thus we find that the wasting of the muscles which we thought was due to not using them during an illness, is really due to the shock or damage to the system by the ail- ment or injury. '

The thought then is that an in- jury damages the body as much as a sickness‘ and therefore the body should receive the same rest and at- tention as that given to a sickness like pneumonia.
