A Strange Murder.

HIGHEY REALISTIC SCENE IN A FRENCH COURT ROOM,

Lonnon, Nov 18.—A_ great tion has been caused by a peculiar mur- der trial in France, and it is feared that trouble may arise from the state of popular feeliog. The trial took place at Ille et Vila‘ne assizes, and included an investigation into the manner o¢ the death of a farmer named Beaudouin, who was killed while asleep in bed, under very peculiar circumstances, He

was lying by the side of his wife, ac- cording ‘to the statements made in court, and yet she declared that she did not hear the noise of tirearms, not-

withstanding that the man was shot. His wife asserted that the first intima- tion she had of the murder was trom the smoke from the weapon used to assassinate him and the blood which flowed trom the wound made by the builet. Her story did not reecive

general credence, even by those dispos- ed in the woman’s favor, but suspicion fell on a young map, 2 vagabond and a reckless character, named Brageul. Brageul was employed in some interior capacity on the farm by Beaudouin,bu: was discharged by him, and at first it was supposed the marder might have been committed merely out of revenge. The fellow, on being arrested, however, not only confessed having committed the crime,but asserted that he had bece instigated by Mme. Beaudouin to kill her husband, and bad been paid by her for the deed. The wife's reason, Brageul declared, tor compassing her Lusbaa ‘’s death was bis alleged flirtations with another woman. The murderer said Mme. Beaudouinadmitted him by the window at night, and when he had en- tered the room, returned immediatcly to bed and laid down beside her bus- band who was fast asleep. Brageul was armed with a gun, which he rested across the woman's legs, in order to ,zet a precision of aim, and so shot the man, The court room was the scene of a real- istic sensational effect in the course of the trial. ‘The judge had the blood stain- ed bed brought into court and com- pelled the prisoners, the murderer and the wife, to assume the identical posi- tion which they occupied at the moment ot the murder as described by Bragenl. Notwithstanding the overwhelming evi- dence against Mme. Beaudouin, and tho circumstantial proofs of her guilt, the jury committed her of complicity in the crime, avd found Brageul guilty. The latter was condemned to imprisonment for life at hard labor. The greatest in- dignation prevails io regard tothe view of the case taken by the jury from the absurdity of theiridea thata man may be killed by being shot with a guo and witb his wife lying close beside hbiin sleeping soundly measwhile. --~ Special Notices.
