This is not the usual historical novel: it is even better. It is really a chronicle of the voyage of the "Mayflower." the story of those who were the passengers, and the tran- bles they had in forming a settle- ment in the New World. Mr. Geh- ler had the idea of writing such a book after his perusal of a journal written by one or the settlers of New Plymouth. Before starting actual writing he made himself fully Icuualnted with the project by intensive research of all possible documents and records. The pre- paration he made is at once 'ap:lar- em when one begins to read his book.

The atmosphere of the time is given in the first chapter, when the first characters are introdua,-gd, The various trade had their rank, and the clothing a person wore largely denoted their t ” in life. FDINBURGI-I. May 2, - some fifteen years ago, the chief of the Mounds received at the historic castle of Dunvezan, a gathering or olansmen who had made their way to Skye from all parts of the world. There were Polish Mecbeods; there were German Maclicods indeed scarcely a country was not represented by Macbeods. many of whom had lost the original spel- ling of their name but had retained throughout the generations of exile the love of their ancestral island.

This gathering of the Macbeods will be repeated in May during "Skye week". when Flora Mac- (god or Meobeod .. new chief of the great clan - will welcome her lrlnsmen.

Skye Week (May 30-27). will be opened at the island's capital or Portree. After the ceremony there will be Highland Games in sight of Skye's magnificent hills - the Black Ouiliin. renowned for their beauty and for their gruelling rock imbs.

A "feill" will be opened by Lady I-lermolne Cameron of Lochiel and there is to be a MacLcod Day at Dunvegan Castle when Flora of Maclicod will welcome all her guests. shinty matches. sheep dog trials, cruises and tours will hillb- iight the week's events.
